How did I not know this? I've been aware of him forever. I've read about him in a number of Celtic books and knew his numbers as a Celtics pretty well off hand but, for some reason, always thought he was Black. Nope. White.

Anyone else have any Celtic-related misconceptions that they held for way too long before finding out the truth?

Bailey Howell could stroke it.  He's one of the reasons that Bill Russell won his last few championships.

I still think James Young will have a career.

I edited the title.  I certainly appreciate the discussion of Bailey Howell but we really don't need to focus on the race aspect of him.

Upon further investigation, I think I've been confusing Howell with Wayne Embry all these years. I knew Howell's stats but Emrby, for whatever reason, is the guy I've had in my head.

Embry wasn't a very big part of the Celtics but he was on the championship team in '68 had made a handful of all star games for the Cincinnati Royals in the early 60's.  He was only with the Celtics for 2 seasons. Howell was in Boston for 4 seasons, 3 times averaging over 19 ppg and twice for championship teams. Looking over his numbers from those first 3 seasons in green, he completed a pretty devastating scoring trifecta with John Havlicek and Sam Jones.

Anyone watching the game on ESPN last night catch Hubie Brown's trivia question? Only once in Celtic history have 3 Celtics averaged 20+ ppg in one year. Who were they?

I listened to Johnny Most broadcast of Bailey Howell's first game as a Celtic, in 1966. And every game after for the next 10 years.

It was Bill Russell's first year as player-coach.

I recall Howell played very well that game, and for the next 3 seasons with the Celtics.

Some of my happiest memories as a Celtic fan.

Yeah, and then he's like "most people will get Havlicek and Sam Jones" as if the average fan's gonna go there instead of guessing it's one of the modern Big 3s.

But the third of course is the man of the hour, the demographically ambiguous Mr Howell.

Hubie invoking Howell's name on national TV was the only joy I got out of last night.
