Id go I.T. before Kawhi if were even mentioning these individuals

I mean that an absurd take, but by all means I'd love to hear that argument.

In 20 years the only player who anyone will talk about from this regular season is Russell Westbrook.

And further, his 2017 regular season will be, in all likelihood, one of the five most notable regular seasons of the post-3pt era. He broke a record many thought would never be broken.

I don't see how there's even a question.

It will probably end up being a little like the MLB MVP vote in 1947, where Ted Williams lost to DiMaggio because of the 56-game hitting streak. Or like Maris in 1961.

It's an iconic moment. People may realize later that the award was perhaps given to a less deserving player on some dimensions, but Westbrook has shattered expectations and that's what has always warranted MVP awards.

Edit: TP to Pho for the thread. A nice diversion!

That's a strong and compelling argument Boris, but isn't the milestone you're talking about kind of arbitrary? We've seen LeBron and others average 30 pts and just shy of double digits in boards and assists. Was it really so far outside of what we thought was possible? Or did we just not think anybody would be so persistent and focused in their stat chasing for a whole season?

It's an impressive achievement but I don't think it's the most remarkable or certainly impactful individual season this year.

Westbrook and harden put very impressive stat lines and their teams without them are not going anywhere... Especially thunder.

But harden is a turnover machine and he disappears at crunch time and Westbrook is not very efficient.

But a triple double season is very impressive accomplishment IMHO

1. Leonard (flawless season, OK, OK, he got in the 5 game long-range shooting slump after a concussion.)
2. Harden (1 hair above Westbrook, team performance, and contender ship are no joke. If you say he has a better supporting cast read below.)
3. Westbrook (magnificent, but then gets a penalty for "chasing" away KD, who figured he wasn't the one to be his right hand, the 3rd best player in the league out of the city.
4. Curry (fantastic team and individual play without KD, best league record)
5. Thomas (if we keep the 1. seed, have to give him some well-deserved love)

LBJ is still spectacular, but some things bump him out;
- lackadaisical defense (he is not IT4 to have the height excuse)
- poor team performance regarding the available talent
- public passive-aggressive communication towards teammates and management

Harden doesn't impress me at all other than the assists and rebounds. Too many of  His points come from flops free throws. And his lack of defense is a joke

He's a scoring master and he's efficient. He could lead the NBA is PPG and APG.

My problem with WB is that he's chasing triple doubles rather than making the correct decision.
Like he's blatantly passing once he gets his 20ppg and stops shooting when he should. And vice versa. Harden makes the right play, pretty much every time. If Harden wanted to average a triple double he probably could too.

WB has the lowest contests vs opponents field goals of anyone in the NBA. That is because he literally stops guarding his man to go and grab a rebound. He won't shoot layups or attempt to get to the line when he should (after he's got his nightly point tally) and will try and pad his assists.

It's honestly a joke.

TP, I agree. TDs have inflated this year, lowering their value (all markets have that trait, and so does this, MVP market) .
It would be interesting that 2 guys in the league history that averaged them didn't win the MVP. And there are similarities between the 1962 and 2017, both seasons were statisticaly famous. TDs are a way for media to gather attention. Look at it this way, is 27/11/10 that much better than 27/11/9? Not really, but the 1st one grabs more attention, translates to money toward ESPNs and TNTs.

The difference is RW is still stat padding...

The meaning(lessness) of Westbrook's triple-doubles

http://www.thecoli.com/threads/the-meaning-lessness-of-westbrooks-triple-doubles.520571/

TP for finding that.
That was thorough. It supports what I feel about his stat chasing. I think Hardens 29-11-8 is more impressive than Westbrook's 31-10-10.

Westbrook or Hardin will get it, maybe a tie, but no one has been more valuable to their team than Thomas has to the Celtics.
