How in the world does Brad Stevens allow Marcus Smart to take so many shots?  His shot selection is awful.

Right now, and going forward unless his shooting drastically improves, he projects as a defensive specialist.  And IMO he is the odd one out if the Celtics select a guard in this years draft.

Yes he tough, yes he plays very good defense and yes he improved his FT shooting.  And yes he has a role, even a important one, as a defensive stopper.  But he is Rondo like on offense, meaning a layup offense, he should shoot the ball sparingly.  But at least Rondo could dish and knew his limitations.

The past 2 games, against bad teams no less, has shown that Smart is not ready to be a starter in this league (unless your other 4 players are offensive juggernauts) and a contributor on offense.  Smart is overall a solid bench guard, with very good defensive presence, average playmaking, and poor offensive capabilities.

I now conclude that, yes, Bradley is overall the better player.

This is over-reaction based on the 2 games they played without IT.  This is a team problem and a coaching problem not a Smart problem.  You will regret trading away Marcus Smart, IMO.

Bradley is certainly better.

Marcus needs to shoot less.

That said, he is good out of the post, and his value as a distributor is very real. He can have a positive impact on offense if he really cuts down his bad shots.

Plus, while bradley is better, I believe points and awards get you overpaid while things that you cant place on a resume(the things Marcus does really well) leave you underpaid.

Then account for the fact that Marcus will be 23 come next contract and its not unreasonable for his shooting to improve based on his 80% ft shooting ability.

I agree, Marcus should be the odd man out, but unless he was included as a piece in a big deal, Marcus wouldn't bring much on his own. To me he's like a 7th guy on a good team!!

I am happy with him shooting the long ball if he's open and it comes to him in the system, not when he forces it. For his off the dribble creation moves I would much rather see him get in the paint. That is where he is most useful as a scorer and facilitator.

He's been showing some nice post moves lately.  He is using his strength advantage to back down or drive through defenders.

The Boston Celtics currently possess the NBA's 5th best record. Marcus Smart is 5th on the team in MPG. 5th best team should qualify for good and Marcus is our 5th guy.

Oh, hes also 22.

Marcus needs to facilitate more, and let his scoring come off of that. He's at his best when he's passing well, and gathering assists.

When he gets it into his mind that he's going to get aggressive on offense by scoring, his game suffers.

If the C's take Fultz, AB is on his way out. I doubt that DA pays AB what he'll demand when you have a guy like Fultz or Jackson ready to be the main guy in a couple years. And Smart will be more Cap friendly.

Yeah Smart is streaky, but his shot isn't broken, and looks better than it did when he first came in. And he's improved his FT shooting. Kidd did the same thing, improved on the line and then a few years later became a decent 3pt shooter.

Remember when AB use to dribble the ball off his foot with in the first couple minutes of him getting in, and couldn't hit the back board? Yeah he's good now, but when he first came into the league, every one was on DA's case about drafting the kid.

Oh and Rozier would be out before Smart too. People really devalue Smarts defense around here. Dude can change a game with his D, and thats impressive. More so than filling the bucket from the 3pt line.

I'm very glad I'm not paid to figure out what to do with Marcus Smart.  He can look indispensable at times and detrimental at others, and the two sides can show up on consecutive possessions.

yeah. He is certainly puzzling.

My optimistic belief is that the truly awful stuff can be developed away, while the brilliance cannot be learned.

The bottom line is if I'm coaching the Celtics, there is no way Marcus Smart is not on the floor in the last 3 minutes of a close game.  Brad Stevens feels the same way.  So should anyone that knows basketball beyond fantasy sports stats.  I agree with the post that labels him a top 5 player on a top 5 team.  Everything else is over analyzing.
