A great article on the subject of sitting players at times like this:

"Kerr's call to rest stars on back-to-back part of modern NBA reality"

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/18884059/science-brutal-travel-led-kerr-rest-stars

Suck it up, do you even know why you are being paid millions of dollars? Part of it is because of the huge demand of the game on your body. Now you want to cheat the fans by taking the money and 'prolonging' your playing career. Kerr should be ashamed of himself. If he really thought this through why did he not sit the players yesterday instead of the Saturday game where many fans could have planned activities around the nationally broadcast Saturday game. That article was long and repetitive, did not say much. Basically states that the schedule is brutal, yeah we knew that, it subjects the players to the risk of injury, yeah we knew that too. Suck it up and stop cheating the fans.

Agreed.  Unfortunately, we can't all sporadically call out of work to avoid "burnout."

How do you feel about B2B2B like there were during the lockout season?  Should those be allowable in your opinion and should players suck it up and have to play through those as well?

NBA players used to play 82 games while flying COMMERCIAL from city to city.  You can't get more brutal than that.

The idea of giving players a break throughout the season isn't terrible but it has become ridiculously abused.  There is NO justification for playing everybody against Minny and then sitting them all against the Spurs.

Popovich is the one who started this and no one in the league office had the stones to tell him he doesn't make millions because he coaches basketball.  He gets paid because he's in the entertainment business.  They've let it go on for so long, though, that there's now this huge cultural inertia against doing anything.

The money they get paid to be "entertainers" are all a function of BRI.  So if the teams/players/coaches are willing to sacrifice money in order to get this rest they feel is that necessary because the league refuses to cooperate, then so be it.  (And I do believe moves like this have an effect on BRI, but that's an arguable point)

What?  These players and coaches are on guaranteed contracts, BRI be [dang]ed, and the whole point is to deal with a problem BEFORE it starts costing the league money.

And just to repeat...

Since Steve Kerr will still be making millions of dollars after doing this, he clearly does know why he’s being paid millions of dollars, unlike basketball fans who don’t care if players on his team get injured.

Further, as the article points out, they fly more miles than any other team in the league. There's also more nationally televised games these days than in the past, and more of them for the best teams in the league than the others.

If you feel that strongly about it, stop watching.

Make your voice heard with your money.  If enough people feel strongly about it, the league will have to change.

Because ultimately, the only way to change this is to change the schedule.  The league can't dictate to individual teams when to play, or not play, any specific player.

Agreed, at some point the NBA has got to look at this and change their scheduling to avoid this, either by shortening the season or starting the season early and/or ending it late.

(my conspiracy take)

I really do think a big part of Kerr sitting down the stars is because they he thinks Steph Curry isn't getting enough calls. Ricky Rubio has been hounding him in their game against Minnesota and he isn't getting any whistles. I think part of this is the schedule, but a bigger part is basically Steve Kerr going "oh, you're not going to call the fouls on one of our best players? you're not getting your hyped up national TV match."

Of course I have no evidence of this, but I'm invoking the Bill Maher "I don't know it for a fact, I just know it's true" clause.

I VOTED with my money a long time ago. You think I watch this crap as religiously as I used to? I only watch the Celtics play. And if they start to pull this nonsense I will cut them off too.

What is the evidence that "resting" healthy players has any impact on future injuries?

They can require official medical reports anytime a player is held out of a game and fine teams that rest players for no medical reason.  Maybe give every player 4 rest days but with the rule they have to be taken for home games.

this nonsense needs to stop. The NBA is selling a product, the fans are consumers. You cannot advertise a product and then deliver something inferior to what you advertised.

Doesn't this comment belong in the Sixers' thread?

Sorry I do not post in the off topic forum.
TP for the burn on the Sixers.

I don't mind the sitting if it's once or twice a season. When you buy a ticket you're betting that everyone you want to see if going to be healthy. It doesn't always work out. If the sitting helps keep guys healthy and thus keeps guys on the floor for more games throughout the year by keeping them from getting injured as frequently, then it's a net positive.

Some money is surely lost as Id imagine the ratings for this game are 1/4 what they would have been.

Thing is that other owners cant Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline. at the Warriors and Spurs because those teams(especially the Warriors) are pulling in more money that pretty much anyone.

TP for the best argument in favor of resting that I have seen so far, but there must be convincing evidence that the rest actually reduces the risk of injury down the line.
