If that's the standard for a retired number than we would be lucky to have one every century.

Imagine if it was applied league wide?

Russell - Celtics
Kareem - Lakers
Bird - Celtics
Magic - Lakers
Jordan - Bulls
Duncan - Spurs
Lebron - Heat

Is that it?

I double checked Isiah Thomas and David Robinson, but neither qualified.  i think you nailed it.

Easy solution: triple digits.

Oh yeah!  Who's gonna be the first Celtics #123 ?? 😄😄

Players could go w their home cities area code !

617 would be like easily the most coveted 😄

I've always thought they should unretire 1 and 2 and just have Red and Walter Browns names up

It's a good problem to have. The Yankees sure aren't complaining and they have as many retired as the C's (plus they have 40 players per season and a manager with numbers). The teams with the most retired numbers unsurprisingly are amongst the best franchises in their respective sports.

If we keep retiring numbers, that's a good thing. That means we are having quality players making significant impacts on our franchise.

I hope we run out of numbers to use.
