For teams considering a trade for George, here’s the risk: As a free agent in the summer of 2018, he has considered re-signing with Indiana or joining his hometown Los Angeles Lakers, sources tell The Vertical.

Teams trading for George run the risk of losing the four-time All-Star to a Lakers franchise that will have the salary-cap space to sign him in 2018. The Lakers’ hiring of Magic Johnson as president of basketball operations will be an interesting twist to George’s free-agent recruitment, given that Johnson has been something of a George family icon going back to George’s childhood in nearby Palmdale, Calif.

Before anyone panics too much, I wanted to hop in and say that the Lakers would need to dump salary and not extend Randle for this to be completely true.  They could have the room, but it's not fait accompli.

  • #18 at any cost.
Only issue is having PG be a rental for 1.5 years and burning everything you have and him not resigning...

Once he's on the Celtics for a few months , he won't want to leave.

I was going to say, I recall a certain Celtic great who grew up in Inglewood, CA as a die hard Laker fan.. still though, those ties with magic are hard to ignore.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
I think this is just Bird doing a solid for Danny and putting pressure on the Bulls.

Man, wouldn't that be something. Imagine if the Bulls cave merely because of this, that would be excellent.

Larry, still has some love for Boston.

On the other hand, he's had Bird there for his entire career. Some of the Celtics mystique has to have rubbed off.

80s Lakers vs. 80s Celtics...it's the rivalry that never dies.

If he's actually truthful about what he said about winning, then he would have NO PROBLEM resigning for Boston.

The Lakers in 2019 wouldn't be ready, even with the Magic ties, if he's really about winning, there's no way he won't consider playing for us fir the next few years.

this is a massive overpay, potential 3 top 5 picks and AB. come on.

They aren't sure he'll resign in 2018.

Yeah, either get the '17 or the '18 Brooklyn, not both.

One of those is the trick to keep Paul George.

I posted this in another thread, but it feels that Woj has confirmed my point:

Does anyone seriously think that Larry Bird is going to trade Paul George, especially for what DA is willing to offer?

I think more likely than not he stays.  But Bird, like Ainge, is aggressive when it comes to making these sorts of decisions.  The Pacers team, as constructed, isn't working.  Over the summer when it wasn't working he surprised everyone by letting Vogel go and swapping Hill for Teague.  A couple years earlier, he surprised everyone by letting Lance walk away for what seemed like a very team-friendly offer.  He's not afraid to go against the grain.

His Plan A right now is to try to bring in more help for the team this week.  But if he can't, he has to decide whether he'll be able to improve the team this summer.  George has pretty much intimated that he won't stick around after next year if the Pacers don't improve.  The best offers Bird will see for George are probably today and tomorrow.  If Bird doesn't think he can make this current team around George work in time, he won't be afraid to make a trade.

Just make George agree to an extension if he is traded.

George will take one of the two BKN picks and two of the "Big Four (Bradley, Smart, Brown, Crowder)."

I value George>Butler. I'd probably only do one of the big four and a pick for him. Doubt that Bird is doing this just to help out a buddy but, for the next 25 hours, I'll hope it's true.

I would give up 2 of the big 4 if we gave BK 18.  Bradley goes either way.  Only one of the big 4 if we give up BK17.  Also, Zizic is probably as good an asset as one of the Big 4, but nobody will know that until the end of next year.
