One NBA executive joked recently that it was a two-horse race as it pertains to Hayward’s future, suggesting he’d only meet with the Celtics and Jazz in free agency and if he makes an All-NBA team, then the decision gets easier. Hayward has a $16.73 million player option that he is expected to decline. The Jazz will have to face the facts that Hayward can’t really commit to them long-term until this summer and he won’t know if he’ll qualify for the huge payday of a designated veteran until after the season. The Jazz are, at this point, turning away anything with Hayward attached, but there is a reality to all of what Utah will have to come to grips with. League sources doubted seriously that Utah trades Hayward and concede that although there is a risk, it will be tough for Hayward to get an All-NBA selection this year, despite being named an All-Star.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Cool to hear. TP for posting.

Does anyone know if Hayward qualify for the $200 million extension and/or how much more can Utah pay him?

Edit: I see if he makes an All NBA team he qualifies.
Actually he's got a decent shot at getting one of the last spots on the All NBA 3rd team.
Maybe beats out Lilliard or some other All Stars....

What are people's thoughts on this?
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

The Celtics meeting is probably just a courtesy to Brad Stevens.

I doubt he makes an All NBA team this year so that's good for us.

Yes, making one of the all-NBA teams would make him eligible.

You're right. Utah is such a marquee destination; there is little chance he leaves.

My understanding is Hayward would only be eligible for the extension if he makes an all NBA team, which isn't going to happen this year.

I don't think he makes the 3rd All-NBA team, which is much better for the Celtics.

This is labeled as a joke, so I'm not sure how much stock to put in it.

Hard to get excited for this guy, after you just said that man.

The way it reads is that it's a joke at this point because it's a foregone conclusion that he only meets with those two teams. Kyler also put the tidbit while discussing other free agents this summer. If the comment was made just to be funny, which he would be able to assess during the conversation, then I strongly doubt he would've included it in there.

Does this NBA executive want the same trade target as the Celtics?   Trying to convince them to wait for FA?

People who definitely make all NBA teams over Hayward:

Lebron
Durant
Harden
Westbrook
Curry
Kawhi
Lowry
Butler
Kyrie
Giannis
Davis (assuming that his stats don't go way down now that he's next to Boogie)
Boogie (ditto)

Players that probably make it over him:

IT
John Wall
Derozan
Jokic
Towns

Feel free to dispute some of those, but that's 17 guys. I just can't see Hayward making it unless he picks it way up or some people drop off.
I'm bitter.

If you're getting him without giving up any assets, then it's fine if he's just a top 20 player instead of top 15

They award All-NBA by position (albeit loosely).  Hayward presumably is a forward, so he needs to be one of the top 6.  The nice thing about the Boogie trade from this respect is that Anthony Davis should solidify himself as a forward instead of a center for purposes of this award.  At the same time, Jimmy Butler could be shifted to guard.

Also, I know people hate him, but Draymond Green has at least as much of a chance at third team as Hayward.

Anyway, I doubt Hayward quite sneaks into All-NBA.  But I think he'll get a fair amount of votes, and it will be close.  He's having a terrific year.

  • Eagerly Awaiting the Next Fantasy Draft
This makes me think that waiting until free agency for a trade might make the most sense for the C's. I still don't feel like Hayward will leave, but maybe that changes if the Jazz get bounced in the first round and the C's make it much deeper.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19
