It was only a matter of time, given the assets we possess.

Hard to imagine Ainge bites, unless he already has something else in play to land an even better player too, in which case this is a Ray Allen type move.

I mean if you move BKN 18 for Melo and BKN 17 for Boogie without gutting the rest of the roster, you have a helluva team.

If you just acquire Melo, you've blown our cap space on an aging star who probably thinks he's much better than he is and hasn't really shown any leadership throughout his career. Meh.
We have to move a guard soon anyways so why not Smart, Celtics 2018 pick and then our young guys who don't play.

I know some posters think Smart doesn't have any trade value but I disagree. He's still young and has a ton of potential. I think he could be the centerpiece to get Melo.

He would actually work in this offense... and as bad as it sounds would be a upgrade defensively ...

The Knicks are desperate to get rid of him and the price will continue to go down ... Cavs dont want him and LAC wont get rid of their core to match salaries. The Celtics have the expiring salaries to match along with some pieces to entice Phil ...

I would assume Phil is going to ask for Brown and a pick with Johnson and Jorekbo to fill salaries...

You get that top of the line scorer and keep those Nets picks...
I doubt we move a lottery pick for an aging all star.

If a trade were to happen. Danny wont give up more

Melo is more of a four now so we can move out Amir from the starting lineup.

Amir seemed more effective with the second unit last night.

Not likely... Amir would need to be included. Salary match

I'd pass unless it was like

Melo
for
AJ, Zeller, JJ, along with the picks of
Nets 2018, C's 2018, Clippers 1st, and Grizz 1st

Expirings and four 1st rounders one likely top 5 next year.

No chance we give away any nets pick 17 or 18 in a Melo trade, that would be crazy.

The knicks are dying to unload him and hand the keys to Kristaps, expiring contracts and second round picks should get it done. If it costs us first rounders, no thanks.

IT, Bradley, Crowder, Melo and Al is probably as good a starting 5 and any non-Warrior, non-Cavs team in the league.  The question is what do we have to send out from the bench?  Rozier is a no brainer and Amir almost has to go to make salaries match.

As for picks, there's no way Ainge is giving up the 2017 Nets but the 2018 would probably be in play if it meant keeping Smart instead.

Yeah, you'd have to know the trade proposals to know whether or not it'd be worth it to get him. I'd be interested to see what they want for him. Surely they can't expect the Nets pick this year.

Knicks hang up on this call, and fire the receptionist for transferring crank callers. Danny would be insane to offer that haul for Melo.

Even if the acquisition cost was low, I'm not sure he's worth the cap hit.  He would remove our flexibility for the next few seasons, and I don't think that's something we want to do lightly.

And he doesn't do enough of the things we need most right now.  We need defense and rebounding at the 4 or 5.  He's a solid rebounder as a 3, but a mediocre rebounder as a 4, which is where we'd probably play him most.  And he's never been a difference-maker on the defensive end.  I'm sure Phil likes the assets we've stockpiled, but Melo doesn't make a lot of sense for the Celtics right now IMO.

As long  as they don't want the Nets pick, then I'm ok with it.

I'm not.  He kills your cap space, he doesn't play defense or rebounds well, plus he needs the ball in his hands and he's older.  That to me isn't worth much at all.

Both teams need to match salary within a percentage. In a Melo trade, Amir and Zbooks.or Jerebko would absolutely have to be included to match salaries and so NYK can get most of that $27+ million off the books. Any just Knick/Celtic trade without a 3rd team would look like this:

Boston gets: Melo

New York gets: Amir, Zeller, Crowder and a pick

Whuch means that any Melo trade is going make it mandatory for Boston to have a follow up trade that brings in a rotation worthy big as losing Amir and Zeller or Jerebko would kill the Celtics front court depth.
