Celtic's just don't play defense like they did the past 2 years and it continues to dog them.  :-[

So, we just came within spitting distance of giving up 70 to a slightly above average Wizards team, after two embarrassing losses to awful teams at home.

Taking his whole tenure in Boston, Stevens seems like a brilliant basketball mind who is terrible at managing the emotions of grown men.  When the players decide to commit and make an effort, the Celtics can look spectacular.  When they don't, it looks like Stevens doesn't have a clue what to do about it.

You've SERIOUSLY got to stop that, Smart. That is such a terrible, terrible, terrible shot.

That was a terrible -- no, please, no -- shot.

Think Scal said they were 18th with AB, 24th without. 18th isn't that good.

Yeah he doesnt seem to be a great rah-rah motivator type. However, I dont get why this is a problem his star players are all notoriously good character/workrate guys.

Another terrible finish to a quarter....

And... We only have 3 turnovers.

Sigh.

The fact that we're only down 7 with as terrible as we've played is pretty amazing. They won't shoot 65% again in the second half, though if anyone's defense would allow that, it's the C's this year.

The Celtics haven't been getting the foul calls they need. Nor is our defense anywhere as good as last year. We really need Avery Bradley.

I think Smart in the starting lineup actually improves our defense significantly, but taking him off the bench absolutely kills the bench defense, along with the playmaking it takes away with him initiating the offense. So, yeah, AB's absence definitely hurts.

That is all.

When Avery is also your leading rebounder, then there's a glaring problem for the team.

Can we please just trade for Nurkic.. He won't be expensive and can REBOUND (and play decent defense).

Celtics getting out rebounded (again...), and they are undefeated when they win the rebounding battle (that's a pretty telling stat).

To be fair, this is more about them shooting lights out and us not than them actually outrebounding us. We actually have more offensive rebounds than them.

But in a general sense, yes, you're right. We definitely need an upgrade in the big department.

Good Lord, Smart, what was that? Come on. You've been unusually careless with the ball lately.

Yep, but usually it's the second half it seems where the other team gains an extra possession or two thanks to this team having horrible rebounders.. and that has cost us games this season. Hopefully not the case today.

Amir in the doghouse again? Brown starting over him. Perhaps Brad finally realizes that Horford needs to guard the 5's  not the stretch 4's, and we need an upgrade in the big department.
