Trump's wiretapping claims (fantasy) just keep on giving...

The latest claims by Spicer in the press conf yesterday that the UK was part of the spying just is idiotic.  Now Trump is really endangering our relationships with our closest allies.  Good Job Donald.

I don't think the Brits are overly happy about that one:

Quote
GCHQ also rejected the allegations as "utterly ridiculous". The unusual move by the agency to comment on the news came after Mr Spicer cited claims first made on US TV channel Fox News earlier this week.

Well can we blame them?  Spicer basically gets up in front of the world and throws the UK under the bus.  We have a completely disfunctional white house that is struggling to support Donald Trumps out right lies.  What a complete farce this whole thing has been.

I wish that these congressional committees investigating the Russia ties could subpoena Trump and make him go under oath for some of these idiotic statements.

Blame them? Absolutely not. If anything, I think they're being too nice.

The likelihood of Trump lying about these crazy allegations has been well-covered, but don't sleep on the distinct possibility that he's just really, really gullible when it comes to things that he wants to hear. Would explain a lot.

Most of us are. In fact, I work in a field where I rely on that very fact to make money.

The difference is that neither I, nor anybody else on this thread (I think.) live at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

I'm pretty sure it's a combination of the two: he (1) is really, really gullible and (2) has no remorse about doubling down with "less than truths" when push comes to shove.

Honestly, it would be a waste of everyone's time. He'd just double down and make even more foolish statements.

Not necessarily. If he does so under oath, he would be prosecuted. He would be forced to tell the truth, and hence we would understand if he really believes this stuff or just lies constantly.

Yeah, that was my point.  Make Trump answer questions about russia / wiretapping while under oath.  So he either has to tell the truth, or hope that evidence doesn't come out that he lied under oath, and then he is opened up to impeachment.

If it's anything like prior depositions, he'll just pick Option 3 which is to claim he can't remember dozens and dozens of times. The old Reagan Defense.

Plus "I believe this crazy thing, but I don't have hard evidence of it, but other people have made vaguely similar accusations, so I believe it anyway" isn't really a position you can do much against legally.

Partisan polarization is now so extreme in the United States that it affects the way that people consume and understand information — the facts they believe, and what events they think are important. The wiretapping allegations could well become part of a partisan narrative that is too powerful to be dispelled.

Mr. Trump, perhaps unconsciously, has grasped a core truth of modern politics: that voters tend to seek out information that fits the story they want to believe, usually one in which members of the other party are the bad guys.

I think this is something we all already know but it's a nice piece by the NY Times to connect to the wiretapping stuff which is wholly made up but there are still people who hang on every word that dribbles out of Trump's mouth.

This is the worst part of modern partisan politics, that it has stopped mattering what is true.  Even if Trump were to admit the wiretapping accusation was false, a significant number of people would still believe it.   I think he fully grasps this and is downright evil in his exploitation of it.  That only 57% of voters believe Obama was born in this country is appalling.

I wouldn't hold my breath about the Russia investigation. The Senate committee seems more concerned that Trump may have been incidentally wiretapped than the fact that he's been socializing with foreigners that were of interest to US intelligence. So much about "America First", I guess?

That's the House Committee.  The Senate Committee might still do something.  Might.

From WaPo:

Quote
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) called Nunes’s actions Wednesday “remarkable” and “bizarre,” and said the partisan jockeying from Nunes and Schiff — with “no substantiation,” McCain added — were turning the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into a political sideshow.
