  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Yeah there was Giannis, a few other good players, but Kelly has turned out as one of the better players in his class. He's arguably the best 3 point shooting 7 footer in the NBA. Defense has become serviceable and at times he's defended excellently.

Personally I think enough time has passed that we can say Olynyk was a very good pick with #12 or #13 or whatever he was, regardless of who we missed out on taking ahead of him.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Yes, in retrospect that was a pretty weak draft. Kelly will never be a superstar, but he was a good pick at #13, and even more so given that draft class...
Celtics fan for life.

TP to the OP.

I voted yes.

The obsession with that Greek guy in Milwaukee by so may on this board witnessed by the countless coulda, woulda, shoulda threads on Antek-whatever  is kinda sickening.

KO will be forever judged more by comparisons to that Greek guy than the productive player that he has turned out to be.

Hey, we could've picked Anthony Bennett or MCW like Cleveland and Philly did.  How happy would we be then?

You'll get a lot of yesses tonight.

He needs to have a quicker release on his 3. Needs too much time to take shot. Should study Crowder.

Absolutely

He'd likely go higher than 13 in a redraft

So definitely
I trust Danny Ainge

He's an x factor on offense.  Valuable guy because of matchup problems he creates.  Needs to assert himself more, be more of a attitude guy and he'll be quite the player.  He's as of now solid in every aspect, I do expect more from him as he gets older more experienced every year

The pick was always fine, unless you prefer guys like Anthony Bennett, MCW and Ben McLemore.

Top 10 players on the 2013 draft so far:

1. Giannis Antentokoumnpo
2. CJ McCollum
3. Rudy Gobert
4. Victor Oladipo
5. Dennis Schroeder
6. Nerlens Noel
7. Steven Adams
8. Kelly Olynyk
9. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
10. Cody Zeller

It's better to have something decent than getting complete busts who never contributed on their team.

I mean, no... The pick looks worse with every passing year.

If we had passed on Paul Pierce in 1998 for some JAG who would go on to bounce around NBA benches for his career we wouldn't still be arguing we made the right pick.

This is essentially what happened when Giannis Antetokounmpo fell into the Celtic's lap, and then they passed on him for a center from Gonzaga.

Kelly has proven: 1:Injury prone. 2:To have little to no value on the trade market.  3: To have one NBA skill that he's afraid to use.

He is exactly the kind of player that you could easily replace, either by trade, or with a low level free agent any given year.  You should almost NEVER waste a lottery pick on a player with Kelly's ceiling.  It's so much better to pick a player like Giannis in the lottery even if he fails 2/3rds of the time in the NBA because those high ceiling players - when they develop - have a huge monopoly on trade value.  How many Kelly Olynyk's is Giannis currently worth?  3?...  5?...  10?  I don't think any number of players of Kelly's caliber could currently net you Giannis in a trade.

Additionally, You can't simultaneously think Kelly was a good pick, AND be mad that the Celtics can never pull off a trade for a premier player... The reason the Celtics don't have that Demarcus Cousins, or Paul George, or Jimmy Butler, or Blake Griffin, is exactly because they have Kelly Olynyk to offer in a trade instead of Giannis...

yes. he was a good pick. was he a great pick? no. but he was a solid pick
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

I agree with this. He is neither a bust nor is he a starter.

I probably will never say this was a good pick. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. Prior to the draft they said the Greek Freek was raw but crazy athletic and a unique talent. That is what the team could have used. Instead, they drafted Kelly Olynyk- a guy who is not that athletic.

It was an ok pick.

Passing up on a young player with star potential for a nearly 4 years older complimentary role player is never a good pick.
