By RPM last season Noel was the better defender by a good bit, but worse offensively.  Noel had a slight edge overall.  WCS rated as one of the worst defensive centers in the league, not a good sign for a player with his skill set.
He was a rookie 7 footer on a dumpster fire franchise only out-pathetic'd by Philly. I dont think eithers advanced stats are too too valuable.

Unless you actually watched him play last season.  He's a garbage player.

Smaller cost next year and easier to move next year if the cap space is needed.

Don't need a starter, just solid minutes off the bench being a big guy.

Neither Olynyk nor Johnson should be starting so yeah Boston absolutely needs a starter.  Noel could start WC could not, so assuming basically the same package, it is a pretty easy choice.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I am fine with either of them starting next to Horford.

Noel isn't worth choking off next years cap space.   If the Celtics trade him as a rental, then it is a waste.

With WCS, the Celtics can get that cost in cap space back by either trading him or other small pieces equal to money value.
