This realization came to me my last post. Smart is better than I expected. Overall. In a vacuum. In a nutshell. Over the rainbow. He's better than Anticipated.

His offense? Not better than expected, however, we already knew he couldn't shoot. So what did you expect.

Rondo was the best PG the Celtics had since Kenny Anderson, OK. Since Dennis Johnson.

Rondo's stats in his second year

 Rondo 10ppg 5apg 4 rpg 1.7 spg

 Smart 9 ppg 3apg 4rpg 1.5 spg

Smart is one of the best perimeter defenders I have ever seen. Who thought that predraft? Did anyone make that claim?

He's covered  everyone from Westbrook, to Steph Curry, Kyle Korver, Klay Thompson, James Harden, Lebron James, Milsap, and Even Porzingis.

The only reason he even got the chance to cover Milsap, Lebron and Porzingis is because he's so da tough and determined and our coach is the best.

He will probably never be Rondo in his prime, but he doesn't have to be. Steven's is determined to make Smart a three point shooter. If he gets just that one skill he will be a brilliant player, he already is.

You must have had really low expectations.  He's been a disappointment thus far based on how he was projected.  He might still make a leap this year, though.

Again, right now, who would you rather have from that draft.

I assume you mean players drafted after him.  It's a fair point.  I still think passing on Julius Randle could prove to be a mistake, but that depends on how both of those guys develop.

Still, that draft has been considered a disappointment in general.  Expectations were high for a lot of those guys - including Smart.

I hear you. I wish Smart was himself in defense and Chauncey Billups on offense, but he is what he is.

And you would still rather have Smart over Randle right now LB. I know you would after consideration.

Randle is more fun to watch, more exciting. Smart affects winning more.

Plus it looks like we have a bigger Randle in Yabusele, plus Zizic. And signing Horford. Smart still was the right move. God I hope he learns to shoot.

i still have smart ahead of randle, but the gap closed a bit last season and it remains to be seen how much of a leap Randle makes his second season playing a year removed from injury.

How can guys say this thread topic with a straight face.   He is a good players in many areas  and impacts a game in a myriad of ways.   But his shooting is horrible ( channeling Bill Walton) and I am sure anticipated he would be better at it than he is folks.

I disagree he "better than anticipated" given he was a #6 pick.  If he finds a consistent shot this upcoming season then maybe.  Let's revisit this thread after the season is over.

Saying he is a "disappointment thus far" is going too far in the other direction, IMO.  He is probably the best defender in his draft class and at least has shown flashes on the offensive end.  The bottom line is that the timing on this comment from the OP is really bad. We are all looking forward to a new season and have great expectations for Smart, and the whole team really.  This is the kind of opinion that is better expressed in-season or at the end of a season.  At this particular point let's look forwards not backwards.  JMO.

All Celtic fans pick apart every player on their team, but if Marcus was on another team we would say that we need a guy like him on our team. Guy does so much of the intangables that you have to love him.

Understood, I was focusing more on the "He might still make a leap this year, though" part of the quote. For me personally I like Smart, he's not my ideal guard by any means and seems to be more of 28 mpg third guard in the modern NBA. In a league that utilizes the "3" more than ever it's hard to get excited about a defensive specialist guard.
