He was a great Celtic, and won a ring, but he doesn't fit the criteria for having his number retired here. Maybe if he'd gotten here 5 years earlier, but he didn't. He'll be a HOFer, and have his number retired in Minnesota, but Pierce is the only member if the Big 3 that'll get his number retired here

Yes.

I can see where those who say he only played here 5 years are coming from, but he had no choice in that matter.

Danny has stated that he had his eyes on KG for several years before the actual trade happened in 2007. KG - after 5 years in BOS, 1 banner, numerous deep playoff runs and PLENTY of great memories THEN had to WAIVE his NO-TRADE CLAUSE to get traded AGAIN - this time to BKN.

He was willing to STAY in BOS and ride off into the sunset. He WANTED to stay.

Whether we remember this or not - KG's CHOICE to get traded to BKN has ENRICHED BOS with these draft picks and is forging our future RIGHT NOW. It has enticed Big Al Horford to come to BOS because of this culture AND our FUTURE outlook. It NEARLY nabbed Kevin Durant.

It may very well STILL nab KD - if things don't work out in GSW like I'm believing they won't.

KG's influence on BOS AND it's aftereffects (his influence on Avery Bradley as the ONLY remaining Celtic from that era) should NEVER be forgotten.

Those on the "No" fence should WAIVE that choice - as KG WAIVED his CHOICE to get traded for these DRAFT PICKS...

Under normal circumstances - no. But KG is not your every-day player. This is SPECIAL stuff here.

Retired numbers:

Ed Macauley - 6 years, 0 titles
Reggie Lewis -  6 years, 0 titles
KG - 6 years, 1 title

The idea that KG's number being retired somehow doesn't fit with precedent seems wrong to me.

On the topic of retiring KG's #5, its not even a question, of course we retire #5!!! He did far more than help us win a banner. He changed the culture of this franchise and our perception around the league long term.

I was wondering, considering he worked out a buy out instead of straight out retiring, do you guys think there is any chance he signs with the Celtics on a one day deal to retire a Celtic? It looks like things kind of soured between him and the Twolves after Saunders passed away.

I'm not a fan of retiring numbers, Celtics have done that to many times already. Add to that 6 years wearing the uniform is not enough for me regardless if it has been done before. When I think of KG I think of him as a T-wolf not a Celtic. Loved him here and very glad that we had him but I just don't see him as a Celtic for life.

Whether you agree or not, I'm quite certain it will be. The franchise has already alluded to it subtly.

But Pierce will, rightly, be first.

KG was the first great player who chose to come to Boston. We shouldn't look at it as "well, he was only here six seasons blah blah blah." We should look at it as, he was a Celtic by choice, and he poured his heart into this city. KG deserves it 110%.

It's not a question of "Are we retiring #5?", it's just a matter of "when".

The Celtics are going to retire KG's number. Plain & simple.

They are going to do it, but I'm against it. As much as I loved KG, he is and always will be a Timberwolf.

I think his number should retired, but even he wasn't quite deserving of that honor, it is a Celtics tradition to be excessive when it comes to retiring numbers.

I think we've retired too many numbers but since that's already the case I feel ya have to put it up there. Removing my biased love for his passion part of me wishes it was only Pierce up there and other numbers removed like Don Nelson is one that comes to mind.

I just hope it's a no to Ray Allen. Were running out of numbers here.
