I've been wondering about the decision to give a partially guaranteed contract to Ben Bentil, which represents the 17th roster spot with (some) guaranteed money.  Bentil is guaranteed 250K no matter what happens. Is this just the price to pay for an extra competitive camp? Or does Danny have a trade waiting in his back pocket. As has already been widely commented, two players will have to be cut, and Bentil is a likely cut at this stage. He can go to Maine then, but the C's will not retain his rights. Wouldn't it of been better had they stashed him like Nader? Or just given him the minimum offer-sheet, and let him sign overseas while retaining his rights? There is some piece of the puzzle missing...

James Young could easily be cut. That gets them down to 16. Then someone could get injured for the year. Or someone could get traded. If not he's in a competition with RJ H, Jordan M, Gerald G, and Demetrious J for the final spot. Maybe there's an agreement he won't sign with another team for at least a year. He's just not that far away from a roster spot

It buys his loyalty. Once the Celtics cut him, which they presumably have already decided to do, they do not retain his rights; Bentil is free to go wherever. The same would have been true if the Celtics had signed him to an un-guaranteed deal. However, this $250k is a nice gesture by Danny, and it is an under-the-table bonus for playing in Maine (where the salaries are often less than $50k).

This is of a piece with Ainge dipping into his salary cap space to offer 2nd round picks, as opposed to trying to force them to take as little as possible because Boston has their draft rights.  It's about building and maintaining good will with players and agents and even college coaches. If it costs a couple hundred thousand to sustain a reputation as a fair dealer, that is money well spent.

It definitely sends a message to agents and college players that as draft time gets there if you are predicted to go in the 24 or later range you should definitely work out with the Celtics and interview with them.

I'd imagine so. We've gone so far as to show loyalty to James Young (imagine if he's not cut this year). But might as well try to farm as many guys as possible -- may be one gem of the bunch. I liked Bentil a lot in college.

Makes some sense. It'll be interesting to see what the loyalty yields down the line with Bentil. I also wonder what the league office thinks...

It says nothing about his plans. Danny's managing to keep as many options open as possible. $250K is chump change to do so.

I think 'loyalty' is too strong a word as that implies an unwritten agreement.  I prefer the term 'goodwill' which has less obligation attached.

I agree that 250K is not much investment to keep options open all the way to Game 1.

Your numbers are off.

Given to Make Team (barring trade) - 12 players
Thomas, Bradley, Crowder, Johnson, Horford, Rozier, Smart, Green, Brown, Olynyk, Zeller, Jerekbo

So 6 players for 3 spots
Bentil, Holland, Hunter, Jackson, Mickey, Young

But in reality Jackson and Mickey are almost assuredly going to make the 15 man roster (barring injury), so that really leaves just 1 spot for Bentil, Holland, Hunter, and Young.  Holland seems the least likely and Hunter looks like the favorite for that last spot.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

This is neither the first nor the last time Ainge handed partial guarantees to players that he was likely to cut after training camp.

Partial guarantees that paid out $250 k (or more)? Examples might be useful here....

Heck just last summer Ainge traded for Perry Jones and Zoran Dragic.  Both on guaranteed contracts nearing 4 million combined and he cut them both.  Now I realize Boston received cash for them, but Ainge has shown he isn't afraid to cut anyone if he thinks he is keeping 15 better players.
