The way I see it, our trade options are becoming less and less. For a couple reasons but most notably:
1. Our propensity to swing for the fences or do nothing at all.
2. Many superstar athletes have re-upped longer term. (James Harden - Rockets, Westbrook - OKC)
3. Teams who possess tradeable superstars have improved their ability to compete thus creating a more sticky environment for them to remain with current club. (Paul George - Pacers)

Any trade involving any combination of Marcus Smart, Jae Crowder and Brooklyn picks will have to yield a Top 10 player. A marginal upgrade for someone like Gordon Hayward makes zero sense given the assets it would require and his impending free agency.

So this team is what it is or we focus on the remaining players worthy of focus and potentially gettable. This would include in order of likelihood:

1. DeMarcus Cousins (AMEN!)
2. Carmelo Anthony (please no)
3. Kevin Love (meh)
4. Gordon Hayward (why would we when he is a FA)
5. Jimmy Butler (likely stuck in Chicago with temp big 3 of Rondo/Wade)

Here's where we enter dreamworld...

6. Paul George (Pacers are trying to compete)
7. Damian Lillard (no chance)
8. Russell Westbrook (if OKC deems a rebuild necessary)
9. Kevin Durant (I honestly wouldnt want him now)
10. Anthony Davis (pipe dream)

Obvious non-inclusions include: Steph Curry, Lebron James, KAT, Kawhi Leonard, etc.

The way I see it we're stuck to build this team through draft and going young and free agency. No trade target that is gettable is worth the loss of assets in players/picks with the 1 exception of DeMarcus Cousins. Kind of painted into a corner...

We also have to factor that DA tries to buy low and that list of players will likely have too high a price for DA this season.

M.O.
Build through the draft.
Score players when they are cheap.

  • Let's Go Celtics!
Paul George mentioned he had begun extension talks with the Pacers already. So you can probably cross him off the list pretty soon.
2021 Houston Rockets

SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan

Agreed on Paul George.

Imagine this set of circumstances though:

Move #1: Celtics trade Marcus Smart/Both Brooklyn Picks/Amir Johnson for DeMarcus Cousins (this is the type of package it will require which would be difficult to swallow but I would be inclined to support)

Move #2 (2017 offseason): Celtics sign Gordon Hayward

New Team:
Isaiah Thomas
Avery Bradley
Gordon Hayward
Al Horford
DeMarcus Cousins

Id guess the package would be higher right now.
Smart, Brown, Crowder, AJ and 2018 Nets pick to get Cousins and Gay. Still try for Hayward in offseason.
2016-17 roster
IT/Rozier/DJ
AB/Hunter/Young
Gay/Green/JJ
Horford/Mickey/Bentil
Cousins/KO/Zeller

That is a way too steep a price for Cousins and thus the reason why we build through draft and free agency.

I really enjoy this way of rebuilding a lot. Drafting high in the lottery while being competitive is a very special opportunity and a great experience for the fanbase. We can get hyped about our future and our present. I'd say if Cousins is available for a reasonable price get him, but if not we're fine aswell. After being second in the durant sweeptakes I'm optimistic we can lure a star via free agency to boston. And worst case we draft a stud in 2017 (hopefully).

Great time to be a celtics fan  ;D

I agree it's probably too much. I also look at what happens after the trade. Would that even be enough to beat Warriors or Cavs. It's close but not sure. Probably not enough vets off the bench either.

Yes, the targets are dwindling. But you never really know.

And if so, the ,Celtics still have the draft and free agency.

Sucks that Westbrook signed that extension, after every expert said NO Way he would extend/sign with any team---wanted to test free agency....blah blah.

At least he aint gonna be signing with the Lakers--like all the experts said.

Perhaps we should make the contingency Okafor trade---He's young and cheap, so our options would still be good...Stevens could make him an All Star player...Philly probably won't trade him til they see if Embiid cam play.
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

That's what I've figured for a while now, but even if Embiid can play, I'm starting to wonder if Philly would rather keep Okafor and trade Noel.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
Jahlil Okafor

The only trade target that has made sense for the Celtics both long term and short.

He wasn't on the available list just the wish list.  Other than Westbrook the available list hasn't changed.

Ainge thinks he is red or something and can just rip every team if has patience its hard to have leverage when all the players you want arent avaliable
