Did we have to match someone else's offer?

we arent. the celtics are.

but i look at this as a way for ainge to have a range of salaries he can package for trades. zeller moves the win/loss needle in neither direction.

Seems like salary filler at this stage.

kinda think so...I just am waiting for the next shoe to drop - even if its a minor trade to clear the logjam.
I think Danny will be done once Jaylen Brown signs. After that then roster set for the season, with the camp cuts in preseason.

He's coming off a bad season, but that's probably his market value. Why would we overpay for a salary filler? That makes no sense -- another team is not going to want to absorb him in a trade unless they feel he is of value.

1. We've seen some ridiculous salaries given out this offseason. Maybe that's the going rate for the 2nd or 3rd string centers.

2. We also don't have anyone playing center other than Amir.  I'm presuming Olynyk will not be back until January. Also, presuming Horford doesn't want to play the 5. Mickey isn't on Brad's radar. Add to this, that there may be a dearth of quality big men out there.

Talked about this over the weekend, but:

Because he's a) giving up his right to veto a trade, and b) if he gets traded he can now bring back more salary in return. Considering that a main reason to sign him is to trade him mid-year, and that many of the players we'd target make a lot of money, paying him more now is useful.

and update to olly. he had shoulder surgery on may 17th of this year.

http://www.rotoworld.com/recent/nba/2133/kelly-olynyk

"Kelly Olynyk underwent a successful right shoulder arthroscopy for recurrent subluxations on Monday, and he is currently without an official timetable to return.
While an official timetable has not yet been set, a standard recovery period for the kind of procedure he underwent is typically in the five-month range, so he should be good to go when the 2016-17 season begins. The Celtics could have a much different look next year with Tyler Zeller and Jared Sullinger bound for free agency, and if those guys aren't retained, more opportunity would open up for Olynyk."

When guys like Ezeli are signing for much less and even Sullinger only got 6 million for 1 year, signing Zeller to 8 million dollars is ridiculous.  I'm sorry it just is.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

And just like the thread over the weekend, this response does not clearly indicate that Zeller may have been overplayed in part because he agreed to a second, voidable, year.
