The Celtics are not far enough under the cap to take in Monroe without salaries matching. Sully would have to get paid the max for that to happen, and then we'd still have to send something else.
So, if I've got this right:
Monroe makes $17.15 mil.
Sully's new deal under base-year compensation rules would act as 50% its value in a trade.
Salaries need be within $5 mil to match.
So in a straight up scenario, Sully would have to make more than $24 mil on his next contract? LOL.
Correct. And as the max is a little over $22 mil, it's obviously not possible.
So, there'd need to be a good deal of filler from BOS for this to work.
Assuming Sully signs a "market deal" starting at $18 mil, that's a little more than $8 mil in filler that would need to go out with him to match Monroe.
Something like Jerebko, Young, Holland, and Hunter, for example (~$8.9 mil).
