Fans won't like it, but waiting might be the best move. The 17' free agent crop looks like gold. So you'll have the same opportunity at adding a star in trade in Feb, or at the draft. Then pounce on one of these gentleman :

Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Blake Griffin, Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, Paul Millsap, Gordon Hayward, Greg Monroe, Derrick Rose, Rudy Gay, Andrew Bogut, Jrue Holiday, Danilo Gallinari, Andre Iguodala, J.J. Redick, Taj Gibson and George Hill among many others. Durant could also be unrestricted if he opts to sign a one-year deal this summer.

So if no Durant, Horford, or Howard this summer, patience might be a virtue here.

Yeah, I'd certainly succumb to giving big money to any of those three this year with longer deals, but after them, I'm not keen on giving anyone a longer contract. I'd look for more 1 + 1 deals with someone like Deng and keep AJ and JJ.

TP.  In other thread I am making this point, but there's always a few doom-and-gloom fans who think we have to pull the trigger or this off-season is a failure it will cost us more next year.

Don't give in to temptation.  STAY STRONG FOR 2017.

Not leaving or will go somewhere else = Steph, LeBron, Westbrook, CP3, Lowry
Role players = Redick, Taj, Hill, J.Holiday (injuries)
Too old = Iggy, Bogut
Injury prone = Gallo, [Jrue], D-Rose
Not interested = Gay

Remaining options = B.Griffin, Ibaka, Millsap (old), Hayward, Monroe

Not that much depth to 2017 either.

Speculation, your honor.

I see what you're saying, but I think you have to let the year play out. Something always happens.

Regardless, I think Hayward & Gallinari are two great options, so who knows.

I'm still throwing the bank at Howard right now on a 2 or 3 yr deal, & nabbing Hayward next year.

Isn't Griffin the missing crown jewel here?

Howard, Griffin & Hayward sounds about right for contention.

Also sounds like a great law firm.
Play to win.  Always.

I think they need one of these guys, at least, to show improvement enough to satisfy the fans.
They probably realize that. They have to sell tickets.

Lol that's funny. I think Howard, Hayward and Griffin rolls off the tongue a tidbit better.

If we are looking at trades as well going into 2017 I would keep my eyes on M Gasol to see how he has recovered from his injury.  Paul Milsap and Gallinari is another one. If their teams flounder maybe they go on the market, and they wouldn't cost a king's ransom in assets while improving our frontcourt.

I wouldn't go crazy and overpay some players this summer, but I don't mind signing some second-tier players to longer deals this summer.  Taking that next step to being a deep playoff team will help sell a star that we really are just one piece away, and he is that piece.  If we really need the space for two big free agents next summer (assuming none this year), Ainge will be able to create it.  For example,  I totally expect an amnesty provision with a new CBA, especially after some of this summer's deals.

I'd happily sign at least one MAX level (and meaning talent that actually makes a difference) this Summer.

Gives you enough talent to carry over, and still have plenty of buying power next Summer to go after someone if needed.
