We have 3 needs:
1. Big man
2. Go-to-scorer
3. Outside shooting

Big man
Al Horford: while it would be an overpay, I think this is the only move we have unless you value Dwight Howard more or you hedge and retain Amir Johnson to serve as salary match for a trade deadline deal with Sacramento for DeMarcus Cousins. The problem with a trade is you lose some of your current assets and it does not seem Danny is willing to do that. Which frankly I agree with.

Go-to-scorer
Kevin Durant: solves this and yes our chances are slight, but have improved from 0% to 16.6% overnight given we are 1 of 6 teams who have a seat at the table.

Outside shooting
Jared Dudley on the cheap. But rather than signing someone, does RJ Hunter step up and fill this need?

This team competes well:

Isaiah Thomas
Marcus Smart/Avery Bradley
Kevin Durant
Jae Crowder
Al Horford

The question is how do we get those two to sign, not whether we'd offer them max contracts.

My point is that by signing those 2 players, you are already a highly competitive team. No complex trades where we lose assets. The team we currently have, has built the team with championship role players in every other position besides the 3 outlined.

We address those 3 needs by signing Kevin Durant, Al Horford & Jared Dudley which is possible given our cap flexibility.

The path seems pretty clear to me...

I think if Horford and Durant sign, only minor adjustments will be made to the roster.

This season:

IT.  Rozier. Jackson
Bradley.  Smart.  Hunter
Crowder.  Brown
Durant.  Olynyk.  Bentil
Horford.  Amir.  Mickey.  Iverson

Trade Jerebko/Young for a future 2nd.

Another option is if Horford agrees to a deal, trade Amir, Jerebko, Young, and two future 2nds in a sign and trade.  Then sign Mahinmi or someone to be the backup center. Prefer to keep Amir and just sign Horford outright.

Next year:
IT   Rozier. Jackson
Bradley.  Smart.
Crowder.  Brown
Durant.  Yabusele.  Bentil
Horford.  Zizic.

That's 12.  Add 2017 draft pick using Nets pick, best player available.

Can probably afford to re-sign Amir or Olynyk but not both.
Choose between Iverson or Mickey for backup center.

Hunter gone.

Holy crap.  You're right.   We should try to convince the Celtics to sign Durant and Horford.
