That's crazy. So Stein's report is wrong then? Also, is Gordan Hayward even that good. I'd rather take my chances at 3 and try to hit on a superstar. You have two more years hopefully in the lottery to hit at least on one player. Jaylen Brown is my guy. Hopefully he can improve into a stud. If not, try again next year.
Gordon Hayward is very good. Offensively, he's better than Jimmy Butler and Khris Middleton, and is asked to do a ton in the Jazz offense. The Jazz really haven't had much in the way of point guards in a few years, and so Hayward only has about 30% of his 2-point attempts assisted. He's also been asked to create opportunities for the rest of his teammates, and has either led or been second in team assists the last few seasons. In the playoffs, Atlanta stopped us by loading up on IT on defense and betting no one else could step up. Hayward would completely exploit such a strategy.
Defensively he's probably average. He generally plays with good defensive effort, but he's not Avery Bradley, and no one will ever confuse the two. But he's not a liability on that side -- he's just not special.
I would trade #3 for him if he opted into his contract next season. Otherwise I would not. He's going to get a big raise in 2017, and while I'm okay with the price he'll command, it will eat into our potential cap flexibility rather significantly, and that matters. I'm not worried he'd leave in free agency due to his closeness with Stevens.
I like Jaylen Brown too, and I think he's my choice for #3, but if he winds up as good a player as Hayward, it will have been a very successful pick.
