when the Celtics announced that IT would represent the team at the draft lottery almost everyone here agreed that was a sure signal that IT was an untouchable for the Celtics front office, but after Chicago sent Jimmy Butler to the same draft lottery to represent their team people here still think we can get Butler in a trade.

Why does sending IT to the draft lottery a sign that he wont be traded and the same opinion does not apply to Chicago and Butler?

People are idiots if they think whether or not a team sends a guy to the lottery means they're off limits or not.

A player's appearance or non-appearance at a lottery drawing should really have zero impact on whether or not the guy could be moved down the road.

It's basically a PR move and very little else.

Thomas was sent to the lottery because the team seeks to establish him as a household name. He's the face of the franchise at this point.

While I agree with the sentiment and don't totally disagree, there is a slight difference. Chicago was always going to get the worst pick in the lottery, while IT could be considered a good luck charm if we moved up into a top spot. The whole thing seemed a little desperate from Chicago's point of view. With everybody talking about Butler as a potential trade target, Chicago was basically calling their bluff.

It's all about perception in this case. IT really is seen as an integral part of the Cs, while Chicago and Butler may have some dissension. Obviously if they don't trade him, their point will be proven, but if they do decide to seek out offers, they are at least letting teams know he won't come cheap.
