We don’t need to go trade crazy to be contenders.  Assuming everyone one the roster now is a backup or off the team for banner #18 except Smart, the roster here could be the starting line up for the 2018 playoffs or just a rotation we use when we want to go beast mode.  There will be free agents added and subtracted and players likely traded so the other roster spots could be people on the team now or not.  I’m just throwing out this very athletic lineup we can use in the 2018 playoffs just by drafting it.  Also, by the 2018 playoffs Davis and Bender will have had some time to put on a bit of weight to bang better down low.   I don’t think we win the championship in 2018, I’m rational not delusional, but this group of five should crush teams even before they hit their prime.  And with Brooklyn’s pick in 2018 and the Memphis in 2019, we can try again if one of these picks don’t pan out.   If we draft right we can be a fierce team for a long time.

PG:  (6’4) Marcus Smart – pick # 6 2014 draft, done ✓

SG:  (6’6) DeAndre Bembry – second round pick 2016,  #31 or 35, he already worked out for Boston
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAglStIQmfg

SF:  (6’10) Jonathan Isaac – totally doable swapping picks with Brooklyn 2017, fingers crossed Brooklyn sucks again.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi8i66mP7-I

PF:  (7’1) Dragan Bender – totally doable with Brooklyn’s 2016 pick, about to be … done ✓
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYQ5TIbVsy4  (20/12/15 - 15 Points!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO-2M2XkP4k (31/12/15 - 16 Points!)

C:  (6’10) Deyonta Davis – totally doable by trading 2016s #16 & 23 picks to move up a few spots and get him like how we got Olynyk.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pw_bc95O2c

Or … for an even bigger interior presence we could go for Poeltl

C:  (7’1) Jakob Poeltl – also, totally doable by trading 2016s #16 & 23 picks to move up a few spots and get him like how we got Olynyk.

I didn’t put a link for Smart, because if you don’t know what he can do, then why are you in this forum.

I would be absolutely thrilled if we can trade up with the 16/23 picks and grab Poeltl, but I'm sceptical that we'll be able to jump higher enough to get him.

I feel like this draft has a really clear segmentation between the top level of prospects (Simmons, Ingram), the second level of prospects (Hield, Bender, Dunn, Murray, Brown), and then everybody else.

Once you get to pick #8 Poeltl is probably the best player available, and I'm not sure if he'd slip much further then that.  He may well even jump ahead of Brown, who I feel is a high risk pick.

Depending on what players we package with the picks we may be able to get there, but we should absolutely be able to trade up for Davis.

Bender and Davis would make for a really intriguing and talented front court.  Bender has the shooting ability to play stretch 4, and Davis would add a shot-blocking rim-protecting menace at the 5.

Deyonta Davis scouting report:
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Deyonta-Davis-81960/

If we drafted those two, we are probably moving on from Zeller and Sullinger.  Can we recoup some future 1st round picks for either of those 2 players in a sign and trade?

I glad some people think smart will be able to handle point duties and guard point guards too. I wish he hadn't been standing in the corner in favor of turner. What a waste if you're right.

Do you think Marcus will lose a few pounds or just get quicker?

All Marcus needs to do is shoot better, but I think if he was the primary ball handler he would drive to the hoop more and have a better shooting percentage. They only real challenge in putting together that line up would be getting another top 5 pick next year to get Jonathan Isaac (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi8i66mP7-I), but there are a few nice SF options for next year, I just like him the most right now.

I think if he was the primary ball handler, teams would go under every screen and pack the paint.   He'd have to prove his outside shot before any seems into the paint open up.

You can’t crowd the paint with three players capable of draining the three and standing 6’6; 7’1; and 6’10, all spread out to the 3 point line.  Smart would be able to use his size advantage to drive to the paint or kick it to the open shooter.

This team would struggle to win 30 games in 2018. Teams that young do not compete for championships. They compete for lottery slots. Beast more or no beast mode. That team right there has the potential to be great around 2020-21 or it could completely bust and set us back a decade. But even best case scenario, its not doing anything in 2018

Indeed.

That team is hardly a beast in 2018; it's a lottery team that totally undoes any of the progress we've made thus far.

And it has the risk to set the franchise back at least a decade, with multiple bust potential

SMH at this idea.

I agree with CoachBo? Is this real life?

On a more serious note. Yep. That team might have potential and stuff, but in 2018 that team would be a bad team. With a very high risk of not even blossoming into what some expect it to develop into.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

That team will have 10 other players, 7 off whom can dress and play.  This could be the second unit or the first unit or even a combination there of.   If you read the post this is just one line up.  The team could still have Thomas on it or not.  There is no telling how the trades and free agency will shape out.   What I’m saying is that in 2018 I believe Smart will be on this team and so will our picks this year.   The team needs to be more athletic and this is a very athletic 5.  This 5 would beat our current starting 5 and we tied for the 3rd seed.  We could have Noah or Howard at center but in a different lineup.  We’ll probably sign a free agent center this summer.  I’m talking about a nice combination of players we can reasonable acquire through the draft without having to make a desperation trade.  Building a team for the long haul starts with talented young players.  The playoffs are proving what can happen when you have a long athletic team.    This group of 5 would block shots like crazy and could switch up easily on the pick and roll.  It would be so hard to score in the half court on them.  On offense this lineup would kill it in transition with their speed and athleticism.   In the half court they could create a tone of spacing with the ability to shoot the 3.   Davis would get one on one matchups in the paint and either score or kick to Bender, Bembry, or Isaac for 3. There’d be lots of room for Smart to drive or even post up smaller point guards.   The spacing would also allow us to run isolation plays for Isaac and let him do his thing, this kid is the real deal.

I could see a max of 2 rookies in the starting lineup. Probably just one if he were exceptional.
For example, if we took Bender or Ingram at #3, I could see one of them forcing Brad to start time maybe at the midseason mark.

But I like the idea of drafting Bender plus an aggressive/athletic shotblocker type for the 5, whether that be Davis or Poetl.  We'd probably have to move up to get one of those two.  But then we'd have 2 trees guarding the rim with 7'2+ wingspans!

TP for the positive planning, and the research.

I also think Marcus will be a point when all is said and done. His coming maturity, and leadership, along with his hard-nose, intense D, will put him over the top. As he learns where to find his offense, that will also improve. Time to sink or swim for Marcus next season.
