Some Celtics' Draft Facts!

The Celtics haven't picked in the top three in 19 years.

The Celtics have had a top three pick only three times in the last 60 years.

In 1997 they selected Chauncey Billups number three overall.

In 1986 they selected Len Bias with the second pick in the draft.

In 1980 the selected Kevin McHale third overall.

In 1970 they selected Dave Cowens fourth overall.

Picks made in the 5-10 range:
2014 rd 1 pick 6 Marcus Smart
2007 rd 1 pick 5 Jeff Green
2006 rd 1 pick 7 Randy Foye
2001 rd 1 pick 10 Joe Johnson
1998 rd 1 pick 8 Paul Pierce
1997 rd 1 pick 7 Ron Mercer
1996 rd 1 pick 6 Antoine Walker
1978 rd 1 pick 6 Larry Bird
1978 rd 1 pick 8 Freeman Williams
1972 rd 1 pick 10 Paul Westphal

so since Danny took over, we have been in the lottery 3 times. Marcus Smart so far has been proven to be a great defensive player and loves the big moment. But so far, we should hold off before evaluating him. I like him at 6 consider who went after him. I think his biggest comparison is Randle and we will see how their careers will be in year 3, year 5 and year 10.

Jeff Green was really a pick to get traded for Ray Allen

Randy Foye in my opinion was the only bust in the Danny's experience in the lottery draft

We didn't really draft Foye either. We traded him to get Theo Ratliff's contract, which helped us get KG.

Overall seems like a solid resume for the Celtics organization. But for Danny's tenure, I'd probably say it was alright. Not great (in terms of the talent he picked), but alright. Of course, 2 of those picks directly or indirectly led to #17, so it's really Smart as Danny's only 5-10 pick.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

Right and technically the Mavs drafted Olynyk, but it was really for us. So that should count as our pick, but Foye shouldn't.

Yeah and even there it's hard to call Smart a bad pick at this point. There are what, 3-4 players taken after him who have solid cases as better prospects?

Smart is already better than Exum, Embiid and probably Gordon.

I don't know about Gordon. He was really solid as the season progressed. Of course, he was picked before smart, so it's never a question of "did we make the wrong pick"
The guy smart is gonna get compared to the most for his career is definitely Randle. Back to back picks, Celtics vs lakers, defense vs offense, literally everything is ripe for comparison

Randle still has time to figure it out, but right now there's no comparison. Randle is a very good rebounder, but he hasn't been efficient on offense and he is very bad on defense. Randle's TS% is less than 1% better than Smart's, which is amazing since he takes almost half of his shots <3ft from the basket.

I'm rooting for Embiid to make a comeback. Apparently he's 7'3 now... there's still like a 1% chance that he becomes one of the best players of all time.

It might even be lower than that. People forget that beyond the major injury issues, this guy hasn't been playing ball all that long. Missing two prime developmental years is a pretty big hit for a guy in his situation.

This times a million.  Assuming he's ready for training camp, it will be his first basketball game in 33 months.  That's nearly the same amount of time he actually played high school and college basketball.  Strength training and shooting drills can only prepare you so much.  He has to learn what plays to make on both offense and defense, and learn against the best players in the world.  It's a really tall order.

agreed.  2 years lost off his rookie deal for Philly already.  say he actually plays next year and figures out how to be effective by the end of the season --> 3 years gone from that rookie deal.  Plays his last contracted year, possibly looking as good as he was projected to be, and can look to play out his QO year and hit unrestricted free agency in an escape from the mess that is Philly.  One can only hope.  (especially if Noel does all this a year sooner and leave Philly in an even deeper hole than they are now).
