Luol Deng struggled early in his 2015-16 season. And for obvious reasons. He's not the athlete that he is, he's lost a step and he's not getting a ton of touches with Dwyane Wade, Goran Dragic and Chris Bosh on the floor. He was just a SF in that Miami Heat lineup.

And then the unfortunate Chris Bosh blood clot happened, and Miami needed someone to take the PF spot, and it went to Deng.

Since then, he has played good. His shooting has improved, he's been scoring and contributing on the boards. It seems like Deng has found his position moving forward in his career, it's PF.

Our PF spot could use an upgrade. And granted, maybe you don't want to upgrade it with a 31 year old dude, but Luol Deng is something that we could use.

- He shoots 3's.
- He's quick on his feet for a PF. Which means we get a boost in our pick and roll defense.
- He can defend.
- He can rebound.

He's a free agent this upcoming year. He could be a good PF for us.

Any thoughts?

I don't not like Deng but we already have crowder doing the same things at the same position for a lot less than what Deng makes/ will command when he is a FA.

Pass, save the money for a legit 4/5 or a new sg who can shoot. Unless KD comes along, no need to mess with what we have at the 3.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

On a two year like Deng signed in Miami, yeah Deng could be a good stop-gap option as a starting PF. Keep Jerebko as the backup PF and train up Mickey. Olynyk as the backup C. Amir as the fall-back option at starting C if Ainge cannot get someone better.

As a small ball PF he's worth a look. But I worry about him holding up there given his injuries lately.

Yeah I'd be fine with this.  Certainly better than Sullinger.

But I hope we can do better.

That's the idea, sign him as a PF.

He looked healthy of late, in fact, he's tearing it up in the Playoffs so far at the 4 spot. He would certainly be a better 4than anyone we have right now.

Also, at 6'9", I think there's enough size there to be a legit PF regardless of style of play.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
Loul Deng is an excellent player, and in today's NBA, would be perfect to complement Brad System's offense. But I wonder for how much, and whether or not he can remain healthy.

He has been relatively healthy this year. The price would indeed be the question. IIRC, he's making $10 million per this year? I think for that price range and 2 years is a reasonable offer.

There's not a lot of PF's available that is battle tested, productive and would fit in quite easily, and he's one of them.

I really like this idea. Never thought about looking at him in free agency. He's definitely gonna be available because of Miami's cap situation.

It would be amazing if we could swing this trade for Boogie and then bring in Deng on an Amir deal.

I'll be fine with a healthy  Jae Crowder taking minutes he would be playing.

Well, of course we try to get the bigger fish. But who at the PF spot can we get?

Deng is, as Who said, an excellent stop gap until we land that big fish.

As others have already said he could make for a nice stop gap at the PF.

I like the idea of signing Deng in the event that this offseason lacks the fire works we are all hoping for. If the Cs fail to land picks 1 or 2 and can not trade for a star or potential star (ex Butler or Okafor). Then I could see a situation where the Cs draft Bender and sign Deng to start at PF. He seems like a good system fit. His ability to still play some SF would help spell Crowder on D and free up more minutes for KO at PF. Signing Deng would be a commitment to playing smaller which I think needs to be made.

If other options failed and he wanted to sign a team friendly deal, sure. But at this point it's hard to talk about backup options when we don't know what might be on the table.
