In today's any era of the NBA I see him as a perfect 4.   5 might be a stretch.
fixed that for you

Could he? Of course, he is Larry freaking Bird! That being said, it would be a waste of his shooting talents to have him mucking in the paint. You always put players of his caliber in the position most natural to them. You mix and match your 3rd/4th best player in today's game, when it comes to small ball, similar to what the Warriors do with Draymond Green.

I think offensively it would help maximize his shooting in certain scenarios. Imagine playing against the pacers and mahinmi was forced to guard bird, or someone else? Alot of modern centers would be utterly useless against a 5 man lineup with bird at the 5 offensively.

They wouldn't put Mahinmi on him, it would be Paul George. Bird would be the best player on any team he plays for. The other team would most certainly put the best player for defending him on him and worry about the other 4 match-ups to a much lesser extent.

He'd dominate as a 3 or 4, and could probably do the 5 in stretches I'd bet.
