NBA pioneer Chuck Cooper awaits Hall of Fame nod
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/15118575/paul-pierce-wants-boston-celtics-retire-pioneer-chuck-cooper-jersey-nba

Quote from: espn.go.com
More than six decades after Boston made Cooper the first black player selected in the NBA draft, his possible induction into Hall of Fame has sparked discussion about the Celtics finally retiring his No. 11. The Celtics already have retired an NBA record 22 jerseys.

Quote from: Paul Pierce
Why not? There are probably a lot of numbers up there that shouldn't even be retired. You've done something groundbreaking, and you changed the course of history of bringing black players to Boston.

His picture should be up everywhere, and his number should be retired. It's surprising it's not.

Quote from: Avery Bradley
The Boston Celtics are a historic team. I do believe his jersey should be retired in Boston. The history, him making history. ... I'm pretty sure they would retire his jersey there. I hope so.

They retire everyone else. I can't see how this would cheapen it in any way. If he makes the hall then sure.

Interesting question. As a player, he's definitely not worthy. 6.8 ppg and a 33.9% FG% while in Boston. No rings in only four seasons.

But, the historical significance of being the first African American to be drafted, and one of the first three to debut, is worthy of recognition.

No Jersey, he was not good enough as a player,  but his name, should be in rafters.

I like the name in the rafters idea.

I said no to the number because he stunk as a player.

TP for the name in the rafters idea! After all, that’s something we ’ve done in the past with Jim Loscutoff.

I edited the poll and reset all vote counts to 0.

By the way, would you guys rather see Red’s name up there instead of #2? Same story goes for #1 and Walter Brown.

11 is such a good number. There aren't many of those left. If he had worn 57 or 72, it'd be easy. But if he gets elected to the Hall, then it's pretty much guaranteed his number gets retired. I think it'd be more powerful to put his name on a banner, though. With all those numbers retired, his wouldn't stand out. He'd barely be remembered any more than he is now. If there's a COOPER up there, then everyone will be guaranteed to know his name and his story would be told often.

No, having your number retired is a bigger honor than your name.

Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Name is fine; but as others have said, we already have way too many names retired.

No, because those two literally are the two most important people in the history of the franchise.  I'm fine with #1 & #2 being retired because of that.

His name is more important than his number.  It isn't his accomplishments on the court in the jersey that's the reason for recogniton.  It's his place in history with regard to breaking the race barrier.   I wouldn't be surprised if his family would be more honored by his name being recognized rather his jersey # as a reflection of his accomplishment.
