Thompson has a reputation as a guy who hustles and does the dirty work.  He's not much on offense, but he is an adequate rebounder and a decent post defender.  While some posters seem to think the Celtics should get a shooter for the end of the bench, I've thought that a reasonable idea would be a situational defensive specialist big man who would rack up a few DNPs but be deployed against those big men who occasionally seem to be able to score at will against the Celtics.  That the Warriors saw Varejao as an upgrade is a mark against him and he is considered to be a slow help defender, but he is a not-completely-horrible player who deserves a spot on a NBA roster somewhere.

If it comes down to needing that kind of big man depth, I'd hope the team would throw some minutes at Jordan Mickey rather than play a guy like JT.

Below average offense, below average defense, not a particularly smart player, and no upside.

No thanks.

This. Mickey should own those minutes.

Why don't we just sign the best young D-League free agent available and see if a hidden gem emerges in practices?

Thompson's contract for next season was partially guaranteed for $2.65 mil. A little surprised to see GSW willing to eat that contract (instead of use it for a trade later). Could have cut a guy like Clark or McAdoo instead.

tbh, would rather see Mickey get some burn than bring this guy in.  he'd get less minutes than David Lee.

Why is everyone talking about Mickey?

Thompson would take Zeller's minutes. If KO is out long term, I'd like a guy like JT to soak up those minutes.

If this were 2012, I think it'd be a no-brainer.

I'd rather have Zeller. Thompson has literally one half season where he played okay on one end of the floor.

why did Cavs cut Varajao, now the Warriors have their playbook.

The Cavs traded him away as part of the deal to bring in Channing Frye.  The Blazers cut Varejao.

I'm thinking of a scenario where you need a big body to give you some minutes defending guys like Nikola Vucevic or Greg Monroe in the post.

I don't see why signing him would mean that Mickey doesn't get a shot.

Injuries create minutes over the course of the regular season, but in the playoffs a veteran replacement-level 10th man is a useful insurance policy. More so than a rookie.

I'm not saying I think Thompson is our best option, but we're the #3 seed right now and with Danny standing pat at the deadline, kicking the tires on guys like Thompson seems reasonable.

And if we can get someone who's a better player than Mickey (or anyone else on the roster) right now, I think you make the move.

As an aside, I think we are shaping up to be that team no one wants to meet in the playoffs. Tough, defensive-minded, capable of offensive bursts, well-coached...it's pretty cool.
