based on the exchange below...
does anyone know if protections can be added to a pick acquired through trade?

Al Horford: Sully, Zeller, JJ, Young, top 3 protected nets pick, Dallas pick.
big upgrade AND Jordan Mickey playing time. whats not to like?
is it to disruptive? is it worth the risk of loosing him this summer?
is his injury history and age a concern?

I was with you up until this one.  That is wayyyyyy too much to give up for a rental.  Also, you can't add protection to another team's pick that you've already traded for.

for the record i think its to much to give up for horford as well.
and i believe you can add protection to the pick. (as debated and resolved in another tread)

I think someone asked Larry Coon, who said that you cannot

my bad if I am mistaken but it doesn't make sense.
we own that pick. we can use it, trade it, or love it and hug it and call it George.
it would be an odd departure from the right of ownership to put that restriction on a traded pick.

You can't add a protection to the Nets pick. I don't have an exert from the CBA but its been quoted by several NBA folk in the know that protection cannot be added.

No, can't add protections, confirmed by Larry Coon.

You can only add protections by trading your own pick. So if you throw in a Celtics pick in any deal you can add protection by saying under these conditions you get C's own pick but if conditions are this you get pick x.

How can you add protection to another team's pick?  You don't have their pick in the future to give them instead.

You can't base it on your pick because that would tie your first into someone else's and how do you figure out when that rule that you can't trade two consecutive 1st year picks comes into play.

Pretty obvious you can't protect traded for picks if you think about how it would actually work.

You are right that technically it would be protection on your own pick not the other teams pick but its how the loop hole works. And so long as you have an additional first in same year you don't have to worry about trading a first in back to back years rule. But point is you could sort of protect another teams pick by putting up your own pick.

So you can't put protections on another team's pick, but can you put conditions on it?  Thinking rights to swap picks, greater/lesser of, etc.

Can Celtics agree to trade the "greater of the Dallas 1st or the Boston 1st"?  Then maybe even trade "the lesser of the Dallas 1st or Boston 1st" to somebody else?  (Though some additional conditions would need to be added in the rare case Dallas craps out, hits the lotto, and doesn't convey their pick to Boston this year).

Say the Kings are willing to trade Cousins to the C's for the Nets 2018 first, but they're a little concerned the Nets might have turned things around by then and they want to make sure they get a good pick so they ask for the greater of the Nets 1st or Bostons 1st in 2018. Could that happen?

Could the C's say we'll allow you to swap picks with us if either of the first rounders that we control in 2018 (Nets and Celtics) is greater than your own pick?  Or could C's agree to swap if the lesser of the 2 picks they control is greater than another teams pick?

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

In first scenario, No they can't because pick may not convey. They would need to add another pick to the conditions ladder. Also always remember the 1st in back to back rule. It gets tricky.
When it comes to 2018 picks they have no protection so so long as you don't violate back to back 1st you can trade as greater of the two.
