I hate Fisher, but I thought the Knicks were doing well considering their roster and that Melo has been taking a certain number of games off to recover from his knee issues.

that is surprising to me, I really thought Jackson was going to groom Fisher to be his successor. I wonder if he will step in to be the new head coach

Man we are so lucky to find a good coach.
So many of the rebuilding teams are struggling to find a coach that matches the team's roaster and philosophy.

Man it's good work if you can get it.

Fisher had a 5yr/$25m contract, fired 1 1/2 years in.

Blatt had a 4yr/$20m contract, fired 1 1/2 years in.

Hollins had a 4yr/$20m contract (though year 4 was team option), fired 1 1/2 years in.

George Karl has a 4yr/$15m contract, might be fired after 1 year.

At least Jeff Hornacek was an expiring contract.

With the way coaches get fired, those contracts they give out are crazy.  I always wonder how this comes up in the players vs owners CBA meetings.  How appropriate is your slice of the pie when teams are constantly giving away $10m, $15m, $20m by firing coaches mid contract.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Thibs is still being paid by Chicago.  An established coach like Thibs would much rather get a job in May, so he can have a say in the draft and free agency, and then have a full training camp, than have his evaluation period start with the second half of someone's mess of a season.  Aside from Cleveland, which was never going to be an option, I don't think anyone's been hired permanently for any of the positions that have opened mid-season.  I think Thibs will have his chance to interview for the job of his choosing in April and May.

Very surprised by this.  I don't watch the Knicks much (even though I'm in NY) but for the first time in a long time there's a buzz around town about them (thanks to Porzingis).  They've been terrible for so long but seemed like they were making improvements (short term struggles over the last 10 or so games aside).  Not like there window is about to close.  The window is finally cracked after being boarded up for so long.

This seems like a Dolan move.  Fisher is Phil Jackson's guy.  He's trying to run the triangle there so there shouldn't be any issues with the coaching philosophy between coach and gm.  Unless he's just terrible in game situations (which is possible - again I don't watch them much) the timing of this move makes no sense.

Are all 5 years guaranteed?

I believe all coaches' contracts are guaranteed.  The wrinkle is that if the coach takes a new job the old contract is voided.  So if Fisher wants his remaining ~$17.5 million he'd have to stay out of coaching for the next 3 seasons.
