Hope he is back soon

same, immediately after his injury, our so called top defense in the league seems to be disappearing as well. Guys have no idea how important Smart is on the defensive end. He makes opposing guards work for EVERY set.

One thing I notice with Smart is that when he's defending a someone who is handling the ball, that player is very tentative and careful to protect the ball.  That really interferes with the flow of the opponent's offense.

Totally.

AB of course is not bad at this. But smart is overwhelming. Also how can guard 3 and sometimes 4 positions can wreck havoc on opposing teams.

High leadership skills.

Efficiency and consistently on the offensive end would be the icing on the cake

All of this.  Bradley and IT can't do it alone. I think we're even seeing how he makes the bigs a little better with denying entry and getting in passing lanes. He was stronger glue than I thought. You can tell because even with Avery playing out of his mind it's not enough.

We have all this depth, but we aren't good enough to survive losing key members of that depth

Boston went 2-1 without Smart the first 3 games he missed.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

It is both how good Smart plays defense and how not so good Thomas plays defense.  Hard to believe we would go from winning to losing by 15 just because of Smart but it is clearly making a difference.

Starting Thomas and Bradley together is a big mistake. Too small.
Turner and Bradley should start with Thomas coming off the bench.
We did it last year, and it worked.

Marcus Smart is a warrior and a leader. He's the guy this team rallies around when things get tough. Some players have it, too many don't. He may not score enough to keep us all happy just yet, but he is a rough, tough, talented defender, that leads by example.

I agree with many, the IT-Bradley backcourt is just too small. As fine a defender as AB is, he has trouble defending large SG's. Thomas is a less than average defender at best, easily shot over. Many teams are now preparing for the IT's game, their putting physical pressure on him. He's so small it's working. When his shot isn't falling, he gets very reckless.

Thomas is best coming off the bench.

That's the problem when trying to rate Smart simply on stats, particularly shooting percentage. Certain players might produce more in terms of fantasy value, but what he brings to the table can't be measured. If only there were stats for contesting shots, proper rotations, preventing dribble penetration, icing screens, avoiding screens, making big game changing plays, etc.

Now if only he could score a [dang] point we can move Isaiah back to the bench.
