Interested to see how many people would Offer the enigma that is Barnes a max deal. At the end of the day why not. It would upgrade the offense, give us another versatile defender, and its not like anybody big-time is headed here soon.

Yessir, TP. Significant two-way upgrade and it's yet to be determined if he can be a go-to guy offensively (2nd option). He was semi-inconsistent at UNC, but put up some huge performances offensively when it was desperately needed. Considering who we would attract among max candidates, why not? Would readily break the bank for Barnes.

 This season 31 mpg 14 ppg 5 RPG .490% fg .362%3pfg  868% ft

He's still only 23 years old. We would have him for his prime and he hasn't peaked yet. It's possible he could be a 18ppg 6rpg player on efficient shooting.

Barnes and Crowder could play together in small ball lineups. Thomas and Barnes can both get there own shot.

For sure. He's probably vastly underrated given his role in GS.

not that BIG upgrade over JC I say according to digits
I like Barnes a lot - but 18M a year....

Sure, but maxing out Barnes doesn't mean giving him a max contract.  Highest you can go is like, 15-16 million a year.

It will be more than that this summer, by a wide margin.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
I was on record to say that he's not worth the max, but the way he's playing, I think I will have to change my mind.

He isn't the inconsistent HB that I saw the first couple of years. He has been reliable, even on crunch time. Now I'm sure he's not going to lead us in scoring, or be the main dude for the franchise, but he's going to be a good piece moving forward. A reliable piece who can play both Forward spots. Will defend and will do all the right things.

I'm in.

The cap is rising and thus a max contract for Barnes age/status will rise with it. Saltlover can confirm but I'm pretty sure he'll be getting in the $19 million range with the new cap as a free agent. That's aaaalllooootttaa moola.
It's still relative to the total cap though.
$19m is about 17.5% of the total cap (could be a bit more).
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Ah, okay.  $19 million then.  Relative to the cap that still isn't so bad.  The "max" in the new cap environment is like, what, $30-35 million?  More?

Giving Barnes a huge contract will be a gamble for whichever team ultimately does it.  Somebody will do it.  A wing who can defend multiple positions, rebound, shoot, and do a little bit of ball-handling / shot-creating has a ton of value in today's league.  My guess is it'll be a solid way to spend the cap space, provided the team spending on him already has a couple top players in place.

Barnes shouldn't be looked upon as one of the top players on a good team, but I think it's possible he could flourish as the 3rd option.

If I'm GSW I'm doing whatever it takes to keep this team together

I think Steph, Klay, Dray have to be the priority, though.  The rest of the pieces are really, really important, but can be replaced.  Those three guys are vital.
