Kevin McHale was fired today as head coach of the Houston Rockets. On the surface this may seem like a bad thing, but I am hoping in the long run this will be to Kevin's benefit.
Anyone who saw Kevin McHale's pre-game interview before the Celtics / Rockets game a couple of nights ago could see McHale, previously a, (generally), happy go lucky guy, looking for all the world like a man beat down and exhausted. His appearance was unkempt, unshaven and his hair a mess. When one of the reporters wanted him to comment on his thoughts of the 1986 Celtics team as the greatest of all time, McHale, usually always gracious and talkative with the media, blew off the question and hurried from the room. It is possible that the media caught McHale at a bad time to be giving an interview, but it was unlike any interview I've ever seen Kevin give.
And while the interview was hard to watch, Kevin's attempts at coaching were even tougher to see. Multiple times the camera panned over to McHale. His eyes had deep bags under them, and you could see the frustration clearly etched on is face. During one time out when he tried to summon his team to him, they meandered, clearly disinterested in what he was going to tell them. That disrespect was hard to watch.
There are obvious issues within the Rockets clubhouse - at one point when James Harden was on the ground Dwight Howard walked away from Harden, rather than helping him up. Not knowing Howard, I hesitate to bring up his coach killing status, but I feel it may be relevant in this case.
Regardless of whether the team quit on McHale or not it was no longer a good situation for the greatest power forward to ever play the game. I don't think he was happy, and when that happens I would hope that, (if money is not an issue), one would move on.
I've had the privilege of meeting and talking with Kevin multiple times. He's always been a gentlemen, always given his time freely and with a smile. He's suffered personal tragedy not long ago, (with the loss of his daughter). He deserves to go to a place where he is respected for his abundant talent.
Although these things seldom work out as well as you'd like them to, I would love to see Kevin return to the Celtics franchise in some degree - maybe as a big man coach. We all know Ainge and McHale are friends, and I'd love to see one of our own back where he belongs. We owe him for 2008 anyway.
I wish Kevin McHale all the best.
