No.
Jae Crowder is on an excellent deal, and while he's not as athletic, he can do most of the things Harrison Barnes does.
Barnes also wants to get paid as much as Draymond Green.
I'd pass.
I'm not sure that Crowder can do what Barnes is capable of. His potential isn't that he can only turn into a high flying finisher like Paul George but a legitimate NBA ball focal point. This is the guy that was once described as being the closest thing to Kobe since he came into the league.
As of right now though he hasn't shown anything to make it seem that he's ready to be the focal point of a well built offense but its tough to blame that entirely on him either because of the nature of how GS operates. When you have the reigning MVP and possibly best shooter of all time running the show you cant expect the coaching staff to change the offense all that much simply to develop Barnes.
“He has the potential to do more, but it’s tricky,” says Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “We have a lot of people who can really play.”
http://grantland.com/the-triangle/harrison-barnes-2016-extension-free-agent/For Barnes to show out as the all star player that he always seemed to be destined for out of high school, he's going to need to find a situation that can afford him more than a 15% usage rate. Maybe we'd be the right fit.
I know that everyone touts our system as entirely about 5 players moving the ball with no one commanding much individual attention but lets also not forget that one of Brad Stevens most successful teams at Butler was centered around Gordon Hayword creating for his teammates and everyone else filling in around him. Barnes has the work ethic, body type and demeanor of an NBA superstar but its whether or not it's his own fault for being passive or GS's inability to feature him whats clear is that how GS uses him is not conducive to his strengths.
This summer there are going to be many teams vying for his services but IMO what would make Boston an intriguing destination for him is that he'd be able to walk into a developed system and secure assurances from DA and Stevens on how he'd be used that were never offered to him in GS. Finding the right situation is one of the top 3 reason that player chooses a destination. They need to know that they will be put in a position to succeed right from the start.
James Harden went from averaging 16.8 PPG in OKC to 25.9 in Houston.
Gordon Hayword went from 16.2 to 19.3 PPG when Utah decided feature his as their franchise cornerstone
Barnes only averaged 10.1 on 48% shooting last year but if he could get that up to the high teens to add to his value as a floor spacer and cutter he might just be our best option to secure the type of top flight wing that we'll if we ever want to think about getting through Lebron and back to the finals. Jae Crowder is an excellent fit on this team but he's just not that type of player.
