I'm pretty sure the ESPN rankings below the top 200 or so are made with a dartboard.

Yeah, let's not fool ourselves into thinking it's particularly important to accurately rank someone as the 351st best player in the NBA versus the 376th.
apparently with our collection of below-300 players, it is important ;)
Beats me how you can jduge these guys who haven't played a minute of NBA basketball. Dart board might not be a bad way to go about it.
they were far more scientific

Latest rankings: KO is 122, AB is 126.

Only IT, Smart and Amir Johnson left to rank (apparently in that order).

I like how they also provide a team by team list, very convenient:

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/13723434/team-team

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/13710146/nba-nbarank-players-ranked-nos-301-400

Hunter 324
Young 367
Rozier 375

Mickey missed the top 400
Triboy will be crying in his beer over this news ;)

I do find it weird that Hunter is regarded that much higher than Rozier

Or even Young. What has he done yet that could be considered positive?

I wonder how the Celtics will ultimately compare to other teams in terms of how many of their players fall in the 100-200 range.
You’ll have to excuse my lengthiness—the reason I dread writing letters is because I am so apt to get to slinging wisdom & forget to let up. Thus much precious time is lost.

So if you were to take our players and divide by 30, you'd get a rough idea of what number they would be on a team (i.e., best player, second best, etc.).  Based on the idea that that guy said we were a team full of seventh best players and the fans idea that we are deep.

Oly and Avery would be equivalent to a 4th best player.
Sully, Lee, and Crowder round to a 5th best player
Zeller and Turner = 6th best player
Jerebko = 8th
Hunter = 11th
Jones and young = 12th
Rozier = 13th

So not exactly deep and for now, we probably average to about 7th best player.

From what I could understand, it's a voting based on the expectation of contribution/productivity next season.
Which is why RJ Hunter is ranked higher than Rozier. With Thomas, Smart and Turner, Rozier's chances of playing are slim. RJ's are a little less slim because the Cs are thin on 2s and shooting. It is not an absolute ranking of the value of players or a projection of what they'll be in the future (outside this season).
That said, I have strong reservations about some choices - even considering only Celtics players, I anticipate Lee's contribution/productivity to be higher than Olynyk's, for instance. And Crowder should be higher.

Actually, having eight guys in the top 150 is fairly impressive from a depth perspective.  Using your own logic about averages, you'd figure the average team should have about five guys in the top one-fifty.

We're low on top tier star talent (not likely to have anyone in the top 30--unless Isaiah sneaks in), but depth we've got.

DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

Olynyk is ranked comfortably ahead of Sullinger. That's interesting. Maybe that speaks to how much this ranking weighs shooting ability.

I like those top four on the court together, with Jerebko or Crowder tossed in at the 3.

haven't checked out the rankings but in my opinion, unless it's fantasy basketball, the rank doesn't mean as much as the range. For example, #344 isn't significantly better than #345 or #365  but what it essentially means is that all 3 players are outside of the top 300.

Now, I don't know when we should cut off these tiers but off the top of my head, without looking at any players, it would be something like:
1. Top 10
2. Top 20
3. Top 50
4. Top 100
5. Top 150
6. Top 250
7. Top 350
8. Outside of Top 350

Yet then the difference between, say, 149 and 151 becomes significant. Still, I see what you're getting at.

This year's rankings are absurd way more than usual and usually there are quite a few head scratchers
