Yeah, I mean what can you really say about the guy if he follows through with this.

But he has always been great with charity work. The reason people hate him is because of his arrogance on the court and also because he actually is awesome.

Wow, very impressive to see him contribute that sum of money. Even for LeBron, $42 Million is an enormous sum. Good to see him get others through college even though he didn't go that route.
Isaiah, you were lightning in a bottle.

LeBron has always given back and I've never understood why anyone would hate him

RESPECT

He gets way more hate than he deserves sometimes. When it comes down to it, he's never been in trouble with the law, is a family man, and a pretty good dude as well. BUT, the stuff he says sometimes does make him unlikable.

Great news if it is true.

I think the issues with LeBron aren't what he does on the court (that much) or what he does in his personal life. I think it's been more about some of his off court basketball moves like "The Decision." If he had just told everyone that he wanted to go to a better situation and left it at that and not that he was "taking [his] talents to South Beach," I think he'd be much more popular.

I used to be a LeBron hater, his arrogance and whatnot bothered me, but his Finals performance this year opened my eyes. It's easy to forget how special he is on the court, but when you see him play at historic levels, you have to appreciate how unbelievably good he is.

I have two points to this post. I respect and hate Lebron as the player, yet I love Lebron as the citizen.

In terms of being a player, Lebron is easily the best player of his generation/on the planet. Yet people always point to his finals as a historic performance. Scoring 35.8 ppg on shooting splits of .40/.31/.73 isn't mind blowing. That literally just looks like a 25 ppg scorer having to take all of the shots. His 8.5 assists is awesome, yet he still only had a 2.4 assist/TO ratio. I respect his greatness, but I really am not blown away by it.

However Lebron as a man is someone who deserves to be respected. Giving this much back to the kids of his hometown is really something to be amazed by. Also this type of giving back isn't really new to him. Lebron also really seems to "get it" in terms of being a very likeable guy. My example is when the Heat were at a layover in OKC, two armed forces helicopter pilots approached the security detail to get a picture or something with the Heat players, and were turned down by security. LBJ then roused all of the Heat players to take picture with the servicemen. His actions make it really hard to hate the guy.

Good looks Lebron, keep it up.

I think he's taken on this Jordan model of being a businessman. I mean, everyone in the NBA (and other pro spotrs) has to a degree. Jordan changed everything and basically invented the way we talk about "branding" in pro sports now. But James came into the league with such huge expectations and fulfilled those expectations about as well as possible and has always been aware, from a very early age, how valuable he is. It's almost like he's never not been famous, because even before he hit the national stage (which was when he was 16 or 17) he was a local celebrity.

I can't imagine what it's like to become an adult under those circumstances but I think the result is that he sometimes seems disingenuous in interviews. It turns people off.

Big props to Lebron.  1100 college educations will make a difference in a lot of people's lives.  Fantastic to hear about it.

I guess he`ll get his sponsors to contribute and he won`t have to pay the full amound by himself but still amazing ....  I don`t care if it`s just PR or not 1000 kids get a great opportunity
