Imagine that you're Danny Ainge.  It's at the end of September.  Pre-season is about to start and we don't know much more about our players than we do at present.  Out of the blue, Phil Jackson calls to tell you the following:  Carmelo Anthony has agreed to waive his no trade clause for a handful of teams including the Celtics.  The Knicks have made take it or leave it offers to several teams, including the Lakers and the Heat.  Whoever accepts first gets Carmelo.  The non-negotiable offer is as follows:

Celtics get:  Carmelo

NY gets:  David Lee, KO, Terry Rozier, James Young and the Nets and Celtics picks in 2017.

Why the Knicks do it:  They get a solid starter in Lee who is well suited for the triangle, a young big in KO who also fits their system and two young guys who could potentially develop.  Additionally they get a potential lottery pick from the Nets and another first rounder from the Celts.

Why the Celtics do it:  They finally get a star player and someone who can close out games.  Although Carmelo isn't a great teammate and doesn't play much defense, they surround him with a gritty defensive first unit, where no one else needs to dominate the ball.  They also pare down the roster considerably, allowing for more minutes and thus better development for their players.

Celtics Rotation would be:

Center:  Amir Johnson, Zeller, Mickey
PF:  Carmelo Anthony, Sullinger, Jerebko
SF:  Crowder, Turner, Perry Jones
SG:  Bradley, Hunter
PG, Smart, IT

If it was the Dallas pick instead of the NJ pick, I'd be more inclined to do it.

I think i would consider the deal if it were the mavericks pick instead of the nets pick.

At this moment that pick is off the table for me. We are one brook lopez injury away from a top 5 pick. We could really regret moving that 1st. It could cost us a shot at demarcus cousins. That's the guy we really want.

Overpay given Melo's age. So no, I wouldn't make that trade.

I'd be happy to do that trade without the Brooklyn Nets pick. 3 prospects and a mid-first is more than enough for a 31 year old scorer.

Of course I would take his call. It would be rude not to.

I'd take the call but say no to that trade—way too much for an older Melo.

I'd take the call and say "What else do we get besides Melo in this trade?"

Take the call.

Make a serious counter offer.  Do not overpay for a guy that other players do not seem to want to play with.

And it's also contingent on how convinced Danny is that he can convince another star to join Melo next summer.  I'm not sure who that is.  And Danny can't get anyone to join Carmelo ASAP, there's really no point.

The only reason it made sense to trade for KG was because PP and Ray were already here.

Answer the call, decline the trade. I'm not willing to sacrifice that much of our future for a question mark.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but:

I don't think we have the Nets pick outright in 2017 (we do in 2016 and 2018), we have a pick swap with them, which means we wouldn't be able to trade both picks, since the Nets own one of them (the worse of the 2).

That said, if the deal was as stated but with that one pick (the better of the two between Boston and Brooklyn), I would do that deal.

Melo is BFFs with Bron, CP3 and Wade. I read the other day that the only reason LMA didn't take the Knicks seriously is because they insisted on developing Porzingis at the 4 and forcing LMA to play the 5. I think fellow players would be just fine playing with Melo.

you are correct. we only have a pick swap in 2017.

Id absolutely do the trade for the pick swap.

I'd do it without the Nets pick, I think that's fair.  I would give up the Dallas pick in its place as its really unlikely that one finishes worse and its top 7 protected
