His huge lower body is an asset. People (not you really, but on the board in general) need to remember that. The fact the sully has been able to trim down his upper body and keep his lower half is actually a good thing.
Its his lower half that gives him the advantage on the boards and when fighting for low post positioning on both ends of the floor.
It helps on the boards but how many all time greats had the pear build? Most had the broad shoulders and lean waist look. Even some of the better rebounders like Rodman did not have the pear build. Wilt did not, Moses Malone did not. We are left with who Popeye Jones?
It also is not an asset when it comes to running or moving up and down the court. It makes a man go around on you on D but does not help staying in front of them.
The final test for Sully will be on the court to see whether his progress translates to improved conditioning and stamina over the course of the season.
I agree, I still think he will be one of the slower guys on the court most of the time. It is a question of whether his talent overcomes his deficits in terms of playing. He is not without talent, he just does not always maximize it with his on court choices.
He has improved his body, the proof will be when he plays. I think any talks of extension must start with a weight clause though. He has not earned a bullet proof reputation, in fact, he has the opposite.
