The story cited by SB Nation.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/sixers/Embiid_re-broke_same_bone_in_injured_foot.html

This is actually new and huge news. Embiid re-broke it, didn't know it, and the break apparently didn't happen due to anything like the normal pounding that comes from playing NBA ball. Tough luck for Embiid, who I believe had immense potential, but this bodes very poorly for his future. Huge blow for the Sixers too.

What makes that story hilariously ironic is that if you continue to scroll down after the article ends, the first story that appears under 'You May Like' is 'Sixers should avoid Joel Embiid in 2014 NBA Draft.'  Wow.  I wonder what the cause of the re-injury was.  Hopefully not bowling ;), lol ;D, otherwise I can see the 76ers lobbying for a no-bowling clause in contracts for big men after this.  No guitar hero for pitchers and no bowling for pf's and centers - these are truly magical times (sarcasm), ahaha ;D.

That aside, this really sucks, obviously, and he's a good kid, too.  Hopefully, he doesn't turn into an alcoholic like Oden did and can come back strong, but at the same time it's a shame because he looked simply incredible in college.  Is the surgery that Big Z had different than Embiid's, btw?  Just curious.  Perhaps Phoenix would be the best place for him.

Sixers have to hope that because Embiid is still a young man growing into his body, his bones will become stronger in the future.

Thing is, even if Embiid is a total bust, the Sixers still have two center prospects better than any prospects the Celts currently have, plus a fairly highly touted combo-forward prospect overseas.

You're over-rating Noel and Saric. Noel's a defensive big who's a long way from being a passable offensive player. Saric was a third tier draftee in 2014 with a number of flaws including being a tweener swing-forward who is not a great shooter. As far as Saric's defense, being a Euro doesn't bode well for the NBA. Okafor's probably destined for a number of ASGs, but his obvious flaws (defensive reaction time, FT shooting) will keep him from being a transcendent player. A rich man's Al Jefferson looks like his ceiling.

Their future picks are nothing special, but for their own which they'll earn by being as bad as they've been constructed. Their cap room is redundant and who is going to want to go to a tanking team? Years away from being years away.

I actually agree with PhoSita on this one.  No doubt loosing a prospect like Embiid is a touch loss but that is part of the plan of tanking over multiple years.  You can't count on any one pick or year.  You need multiple bites at the apple these days.  The Sixers are actually in good shape even though they may never get anything out of Embiid.

Seriously I want to see this kid do his best against the best. Get well kiddo.

Noel and Okafor don't fit together. We could still trade for one of them.

I always think back to that amazing pre-draft workout thing he did--
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp7PX7hYUFQ

and wonder if he was pumped full of pain-killers, cortisone, or whatever and going for broke [-en bones] to get a paycheck.

He looks so freaking exciting in all those old draft clips. I really want to see him in the NBA some day, but the more time goes by the more I think he is going to follow in Greg Oden's broken footsteps.

Not impressive.
There was a moment there he was being defended by Scal, who we all know is a terrific post defender...

I'm with colincb on this one...

Joel Embiid was BY FAR the highest upside prospect the Sixers had acquired so far.

He is the only prospect they have who (if healthy) has the potential to be a two-way player, and the only one who (arguably) had superstar potential.

- Noel's ceiling is pretty much Tyson Chandler - nice defensive specialist, that's about it.
- Okafor's ceiling is pretty much Enes Kanter - offensive big who can't move or defend.
- Saric's ceiling is maybe Hedo Turkoglu minus the jump shot

Those three would all be very nice support pieces to a team that also featured a superstar Joel Embiid - but take away that superstar, factor in the lack of depth, and you basically have a remake of what the Timberwolves have been for the past 5-6 years.

If Embiid doesn't work out, then Philly will probably be in the lottery for a decade.

To be honest, a trio of Noel/Okafor/Saric (based on what I've seen so far) doesn't really look that much (if at all) more impressive than a Trio of Rozier / Hunter / Mickey.

Noel is clearly the top piece in that trio based on what we've seen so far, and he's hardly a transcendent talent.

Don't get me wrong I'd still love Noel on the Celtics (simply because he fills a key need of ours) but he really is looking like a defensive role player right now.  He has very minimal offensive potential, he's a below average passer, and he's merely a good (rather than great) rebounder.

The comparisons to Oden are off-base because Oden at least played in NBA games before his knee issues destroyed him. Embiid couldn't even get thru a college season without a major injury. We have absolutely no idea if he can even play at the pro level (and maybe we never will). We knew Oden could.

Their future picks are nothing special, but for their own which they'll earn by being as bad as they've been constructed. Their cap room is redundant and who is going to want to go to a tanking team? Years away from being years away.

Noel would already be a passable offensive player if Brett Brown just told him to stop shooting jump shots. He's an elite finisher and good enough at the FT line to ward off the hack-a strategy.

Okafor is going to suck for multiple years defensively, but he's got a huge standing reach and the potential with Noel to maximize what should be his strength(bigger centers who would pin down Noel) while having a guy cover for his deficiencies(Noel's weak side shot blocking). Or they could both stagnate... But your vastly undervaluing them. Noel's got transcendent defensive potential.

And the Lakers picks, the Sac swaps, and a possible unprotected Sac pick the year after Boogie leaves are as good as any draft pick assets in the NBA. OKC is the equivalent w/ this years Clippers pick and the Heat pick is probably going to slot in around 20ish, that's not special but it's hardly the top end of their picks.

Noel would be a passable shooter if he could play within 3 feet of the basket. Took 79% of his shots within 10 feet last season as it was. Would be awfully crowded with Okafor in the paint too though. Has bad hands and turns the ball over a lot so I don't see the second coming of D. Jordan. He's also a hack-a-candidate and his odds of hitting two FTs in a row are 37%. Noel's defensive stats were overstated last year as the best defender on a very bad team much like the best offensive player on a very bad team. He's going to have to bulk up a lot to be elite against bigs rather than roaming the floor as a helter-skelter defender getting a lot of steals. Does have great defensive potential however. Still will suck offensively, will turn the ball over a lot, and likely continue to be a weak rebounder for a big.

Okafor's an even better hack target, but should improve some defensively. However, his reaction time is slow.  I see him as a rich man's Al Jefferson at the end of the day after watching him in summer league just because I cannot believe he will suck as bad defensively as Al does.

As for picks, think you're overvaluing the SAC trade. SAC got better and the odds that there's a swap the next two years are very low. Most likely outcome is PHI getting a mif-first 2018 pick three years out and Stauskas for dumping $25 million and some long shot swap odds.  PHI is going to suck for the next 2 years so the less than 10% odds swaps are at best for a few slots. We got Zeller and a late first one year out for eating $10 million. Better deal.

As far as future 1st rounders picks not our own and swaps:

2016 BOS: BKN (top 10), DAL (late lottery), MIN (converts to early 2nd)
2016 PHI:  LAL (top 10), MIA (bottom 10), OKC (bottom 10), SAC (long shot swap)

Pretty even, give slight edge to PHI

2017 BOS: BKN (late top 10 or better swap)
2017 PHI:  SAC (long shot swap)

Clear edge BOS

2018 BOS: BKN (top 10)
2018 PHI: SAC (middle 10 or converts to top 10 in 2019)

Slight edge BOS

Could change if either BKN or SAC implodes, but pretty much a push. PHI's own picks will be much better which they will earn by being unwatchable and flouting the spirit of the rules.
