They're realistically not competing for anything this year and will be lucky if they even make the playoffs. There's absolutely no reason to pay the repeater tax for such a season. Stretching him takes them under the luxury tax threshold and since this would've been their third season as taxpayers, they would've incurred the significantly harsher tax.

They had to stretch his salary in order to get under the luxury tax line this year.  Carrying 5.5mil for the next 5 years is minimal impact considering the cap is expected to jump 20mil each of the next two seasons.
