for me it is encouraging since it may finally show that weather and nightlife and glamor are simply not enough for each and every free agent.

if THAT becomes apparent, then maybe there will be far fewer posts claiming that boston will never, ever, under any circumstances get a free agent to go there.  ::)

monroe to milwaukee folks, MILWAUKEE...and we know the nightlight, glamor, and weather there attracts free agents like flies.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Goes to show the whole "big market teams can land big names" belief is a load of crap. Especially if those big market teams really have nothing to offer.

And even if those big markets land big names, that doesn't necessarily mean it will work out for them. Example: Amare Stoudemire on the Knicks and Steve Nash on the Lakers.

Anyway, my reaction to everything going wrong for the Knicks and Lakers this off-season.

Big market teams mattered when you had 3 network TV channels and few available outlets to watch games outside of a trip to your City arena.  Players who want exposure now have Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, etce which equalize that big market benefit.  Besides most of those big markets are high pressure cities and I don't see the desire to carry a city on your back in favor of loading up with other stars wherever that may be.

Big markets absolutely still matter.  It is just that the Lakers are a trainwreck and the Knicks have a roster worse than the Sixers.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

Rosters are terrible. Managements/0wners/Coaches are terrible. Neither are remotely close to winning and their future prospects are not good. Also some of the perceived advantages regarding marketing have been lessened in the age of internet and cable.

Celtics are in a different situation, but given a choice between a team ready to contend and one that's not, a FA who is getting maxed-out wherever he goes is going for the win now proposition. We would be in much better shape, however, if the cap rise coming from the new TV deal was smoothed as the NBA wanted, but which the players union chief rejected.

Agreed. All things equal, the Knicks/Lakers will always get their guy. But their roster looks so bad, that they'll have a tough time getting their targets.

That said, they'll always be in the mix and have a chance regardless of their roster condition, that's what makes them dangerous.

But at the same time, it's not the perceived guarantee it used to be.
