Monroe is a star. there is no question he is not a superstar. but he is a star.

this is from espn.
Scouting report
+ Skilled big man with good passing skills.
+ Operates best from elbows, but needs space to work.
+ Above-average defender. He's tough with limited athleticism and can struggle in space.

Analysis
Perhaps the biggest causality of the Pistons' lackluster season was the 6-foot-11 Monroe. Sharing a frontcourt with Drummond and Smith proved difficult for Monroe, to say the least, and it went a long way toward masking the things Monroe does best. Monroe is very good with the ball in his hands but was used more last season as a finisher. His assist rate fell by more than two percent, and his rebounding was down, as was his usage. It doesn't help that Monroe has lost confidence in his midrange shot, hitting just 24 percent on long 2s.

Given Monroe's discomfort, it's less than shocking he spent the summer avoiding offer sheets on the restricted free-agent market and ultimately signed the Pistons' qualifying offer. The move gives him leisure to pick his team after the season and prevents Detroit from dealing him this season without his approval. However, forgoing what would have likely been a sizable contract extension is a risk if he gets hurt and is money he probably won't be able to make up even if he doesn't. It will be interesting see how Van Gundy focuses Monroe's strengths, of which there are plenty. One is simply showing up: Monroe has missed just three games in four seasons as a pro.

He can play above average defense and he can score well. He is also 25 and a great passer.

whats not to like. we always talk about wanting a star. Here he is in free agency and is interested in the celtics. The johnson signing is good because he can be the defensive pf that can be a rim protector
If we trade away avery bradley and gerald wallace. we would have enough money to get tobias harris and monroe.

with a starting lineup of
Rozier
Smart
Harris
Johnson
Monroe

That would be a very good young team. I love this team. Just please get monroe because he is exactly what we want a star. any star will do but he is the one thats available and for some reason Ainge is doing nothing to get him

In another thread someone told me Amir Johnson can hang with Monroe so i guess not everyone agrees.

Of course I assume he wasn't talking BBall maybe in drinking games?

I would have liked Monroe too but Danny sold as bag of crap, it sucks!

I think everybody on this blog would rather have Monroe at $16M/yr than Johnson at $12M/yr. Unfortunately, we are not going to have this option and we will have to figure out a way to get through a rough year with little to be excited about.

The Monroe vs Amir signing is irrelevant...Amir wanted to sign here....there is no proof that Monroe does.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

In fact there's actual proof he doesn't since he hasn't even agreed to meet with us.

Agreed - my only reservation about Monroe was that we don't have a good/versatile/mobile defensive player at PF who can help cover his shot blocking abilities while also stretching the floor.

Johnson does both, and would actually be a really solid fit next to Monroe.

Sadly it's not looking likely that we have a chance at him.  Possible, but not likely.

The salary side of things isn't a problem - if Monroe decides he really wants to come to Boston, then we could pretty easily assemble a package of players/assets to send to Detroit in a sign and trade.

For example, Boston could send Gerald Wallace's expiring ($10.1M), Jared Sullinger ($2.5m)and Evan Turner (3.4M) to Detroit.  This would total $16.1M and so it would be more than enough to offset a Greg Monroe max contract ($15M-$16M) sign-and-trade

This would work for all parties involved:

* Detoit gets assets for Monroe (rather than have him walk for nothing)
* Monroe gets to go to the team he really wants to go to (as this assumes he wants to be in Boston)
* Boston gets it's star

However this is all entirely dependant on Boston and Monroe having mutual interest in joining forces, because otherwise he's an UFA completely free to go anywhere he wants.

That's not true.  He is a UFA.  If he doesn't want to come to the C's, then he's not going to agree to a S/T.  It's still his choice.  Meeting with the C's is not a guarantee that he will sign here.

I think he meant all we need to do from a financial/legal/salary point of view is to trade Wallace's contract, since most people's biggest concern about getting a Monroe/Harris is that we have no cap space left after the Johnson/Jerebko signings.

If Monroe did want to come here we certainly could obtain him in a S&T (as this doesn't change our cap position)...then sign another solid piece via the MLE (which you can use even if you are over the cap) and still have the freedom to match any offers on Crowder (as we can also do this, even if we are over the cap).

We still have some flexibility to pursue guys if we really want to, whether or not we technically have the cap space is somewhat irrelevant because if we have the assets to make deals happen.  The only thing we actually NEED is for the player in question to actually WANT to come here.

As long as we can free agents that this is the place to be, then we can (pretty much) get anybody we want.

I am actually talking about NOW not 3 days ago when the article you quote was written.  Here's items that are newer.

WEDNESDAY, 4:00pm: Boston isn’t on the list of teams that Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today hears Monroe will meet with, so it looks like the Celtics are indeed a no-go.

Free agent Greg Monroe will sign a maximum contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, league source tells Yahoo Sports.
