Marc Stein

ESPN sources tell @WindhorstESPN & I that Cavs and Tristan Thompson are nearing agreement on deal that will pay the RFA in excess of $80 mil

Does this increase the chances of Love leaving?

Kevin Love is staying too.

So Tristan made about an extra $30 million passing on that extension that most people thought he was crazy for passing on.  Nice work.  Glad we don't have to pay him that.

It probably doesn't impact it either way. I think their plan was to offer them both max contracts all along. I have to say this could end up being a horrible contract for them. He really only has one elite skill, rebounding, and he has not necessarily demonstrated for even a full season?

Others thoughts?

Edit: He has apparently resigned with them

They are going to have 4 players locked in to max contracts TT, Love, Lebron and Kyrie, plus another 10 in Andy V. This new salary cap could be a disaster for the NBA.

LeBron's going to keep signing 1 year deals (technically 2 with an option) so he can keep resigning at the new max every year.  So he'll keep eating up more of their cap as it grows.

But yeah, with the variability in max contract #s and the cap skyrocketing, you're going to see teams with 4-5 guys all on different "max" deals.

I will add I am encouraged that Kawi and Butler chose to resign with their respective teams today. However, the fact that a team can have 4 or 5 max players under the skyrocketing cap is really a problem looming for the NBA. Having 3 or 4 super teams really is bad for the NBA and bad for business. You may get a great series or two out of it in the playoffs. However, as a whole the East playoffs this year were god awful. We can't have repeats of that.

Isn't their a hard cap in the league?

Because the Cavs will be at around 93 mil just by signing Thompson(15), Love(20), Lebron(25), Kyrie(15), Varejao(10), Mosgov(5), Miller(3)

No hard cap.  Just increasing luxury tax penalties the more you spend.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

This summer and next summer and then he will sign a 5 year, 200+ million dollar contract in the summer of 2017 that will take him to the age of 37 when he will probably retire.

There were reports a few months ago saying that teams with 3 max contracts under the $63 million cap would be able to add a 4th next year when the cap rises to $89 million. That teams like the Cavs and Clippers were planning on adding a 4th max contract player to their three man cores.

Amen. I'm wondering how this growing cap affects the Celtics cap situation going forward and how it changes the decision making process of the league as a whole in terms of valuating players, offers and salaries. Seems like a great study...
