Way too hard because skill wise he is top 5 but Boston love he is probably at the bottom of that list. Much of Pierce's early years he had a lot of hate from people in the town and region. People didn't believe in him. Not DMC level but it was up there. He was considered out of shape, ball hog, turn over machine, chucker, a thug and a knuckle head. And I say these things because I was a big Pierce fan that had to hear that slander about PP all the time and defend him. Pierce turned it around only because people saw us win. He was always the same player so it's sad he didn't get the admiration or respect for the tough losing years he cared the team alone.

I think Russell/Bird/Havlicek have to be the top 3 in some order (probably with Havlicek 3rd).  After that it's pretty wide open - I could see Pierce anywhere from 4th to 10th, depending on how one weighs out the effect of the stacked 60s teams on the players' production.

Speaking of which, we used to have rolling polls where people would vote on the top players one rank at a time.  We should do that again at some point.

He's comfortably top ten, maybe fringe top five.

Russell, Bird, Havlicek were better, so he's not top three.  After that, I think you can make some arguments.  IMO McHale is #4 and I start to seriously consider Pierce at that #5 spot.

I admit that, statistically, it's tough for me to figure out how to compare guys like Cousy to Pierce.  Statistically, Pierce blows him away.  According to Basketball Reference, Cousy never shot 40% from the field.  But I also know that the game has changed a lot and that's not an apples-to-apples comparison.  And I don't know how best to reconcile that inconsistency.  So is Pierce a "better Celtic" than Cousy?  Honestly, I have no idea.

I don't know how one can rate this unless you have been around long enough to watch all those guys.

Better player?  or Better teammate?  or More championships?  or Retired Celtic?  or....there is no way to compare.

It's pretty difficult for me to rank Paul above McHale. For one season, or at least a large part of it, McHale may have been the best player in the game. I dont think I could ever say that about Pierce. He sure was good though and the championship year he carried the offensive load for us so maybe in that respect he was better?

Nope, Nope Nope

Pierce goes in front of Cousy.  Pierce rivals Hondo.  Tied at 3rd.
Hell, if Pierce played in the 80's he might have passed Bird.

But what are we talking-how many years.
KG has to be in the top 10!

For me, Cousy has to go ahead of Pierce. He was the Celtics' first star, he was a league MVP, and he basically invented the point guard position as we know it. He led the league in apg 8 straight seasons and was an all star every year he was in the league (I'm not counting those 7 games he played when he was 41 years old).

I'm very comfortable with him ahead of Pierce on my All Time Celtic list.

Why do people dismiss the Cooz!?  If Pierce would have been as good as Bird in the 80's then Cousy would have been triple Chris Paul in the modern era.  The man was a genius with the ball and crazy athletic.
Yup

I love Pierce, but I don't think you put him ahead of McHale or Cowens. Both of those guys had half a dozen years where they were at a higher level than Pierce ever got to, and both won multiple titles. Cowens was a league MVP. Pierce gets points for longevity, but he was never quite that good.

Cousy should also go before Pierce. It's tough looking back that far, and like Russell, the numbers don't do him justice, but the guy changed the game. He was the face of the NBA for a few years, won an MVP award and won six championships

Russell
Bird
Havlicek
Cousy
McHale
Cowens
Pierce
