Not sure, but personally to me it's irrelevant as I think the out-of-shape Sully is still a very useful player. I know most don't feel that way.

I agree with you, as evidenced by my avatar. Sully has averaged nearly a double double with good assist numbers relative to his position for two consecutive seasons in really bad physical shape.

Of course, it would be a disappointment if he comes into camp out of shape again. And, to play Devil's Advocate, even if Sully is still a talent at 275-300 lbs., one has to wonder how long that will be true before weight related injuries derail him.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Lucas was known more for addicts I always thought than over eaters.   I suppose food is an addiction for some.  I hope he gets in shape, he can rebound at the NBA level.   Trouble, is he simply lacks the athletic base to be a NBA defender.   He is slow, I mean moving like pond-water slow.

Getting in shape might improve his play some, but it won't make him a leaper or change the ponderous foot-speed.  I think he would be better off on a team that does a lot of half court offense.   But I would be happy, if he lost some weight and at least tried to play D, not take stupid threes and make a little effort on defense.   His attitude is what has always irked me the most about him.   He comes across as lazy and lethargic, when he is not rebounding or shooting.   He took tons of plays off on D, does not always run the court.   That needs to stop if he gets in shape.

The fastest way to move the ball up the court is by passing it. A team that passes the ball quickly and accurately will have a faster pace than an undisciplined, unskilled athletic team any and every day of the week. Sully clearly is at least a very good - if not great - passer for his size.

After he was cut by the Washington Wizards last summer because of poor conditioning and work ethic, Andray Blatche spent three months in Houston, where Lucas helped him lose 20 pounds and regain focus. Former San Diego guard Brandon Johnson, one of the key figures in a point-shaving case at his alma mater, is working out at Lucas' gym this month along with ex-LSU point guard Tack Minor, who is having trouble catching on with a team overseas because he's also 20 pounds overweight.

I hope he does it right this time around.

Change Nothing, and Nothing Changes..I commend Sully for taking this step to trying to improve his game and self. There is no denying he has the talent, once the discipline follows, we could have ourselves a major asset to build with or trade down the road.

An article on Sully's progress (after the draft rankings):
http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2015/06/27/grading-how-teams-did-nba-draft/mNsphyoQ0bIsh26xkOWl9N/story.html

"Sullinger said he is working out in Houston with former NBA player and current workout coach and adviser John Lucas, and he has decided to make his own career decisions with less input from his father, Satch, who served as his AAU coach, and a guide throughout his early professional career"

From what I read, the program is highly valued. Blake Griffin, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Baron Davis among other former attendants. A lot of psychology next to the physical trainings.

An injury-free Sully would have been a top-5 pick in his draft. I hope he gets his head straight and I am sure the body work will follow.

I appreciate the article and info about Sully!!!  That being said, Washburn is an IDIOT!!  How in the heck can you possible rate Denver's draft, getting Mudiay at #7, a B+??  How in the heck can you rate Miami getting Winslow at #10 a B and OKC getting Payne at #14 a B-???????  I also think he downgraded the Celtics' picks based on us NOT being able to trade up!!!  That is patently unfair.  Getting Rozier was marginal.  I will give him that.  But getting Hunter at 28 was one of the steals of this draft and getting Jordan Mickey at #33 was a very solid pick that addresses one of our greatest weaknesses, shot blocking!!!

Smitty77

Yeah, if Miami's and Denver's draft is not an A, I don't know what is.

Yeah, he has no clue. Gave Miami a B for the steal of the graph, describing Winslow as a "pretty good player"... huh? Then gave Indy an A- for taking Myles Turner #11, apparently Turner will "run the floor"... lol. Then he gave the Spurs a D for taking Milutinov, whom he has certainly not scouted for one instant. He probably would've given them a D for Manu Ginobli, too.

His athletic base is so poor, I don't think losing weight will help him as much as some think.   Bottom five in vertical, lane agility and 3/4 sprint in his draft class.

Check out his high school highlight video.  He was so much more athletic when he was thinner.

We definitely have different definition of athletic.  He is jumping higher but he is still very slow and that is against high school guys.

His standing reach is 8'9.5" and his max vert is 31".  That was his nba draft measurements that yields a height of eleven feet three inches.   I see him dunking with arms bent but he is not more than a foot above the rim in that video.

Huge difference between the two.  But that Sully video might fool a guy off the street into thinking that.  Prowise and collegewise not so much.

Umm.... I said more athletic.  I wasn't comparing him to Thon Maker.

He was getting off the ground much easier as a 17 year old than he does now in his early twenties and that's because of his weight.

This is good news. I fully expect Sully to come into camp in the best shape of his life. That being said, do you trust him to stay in shape if we give him a contract extension past this year?

Not sure, but personally to me it's irrelevant as I think the out-of-shape Sully is still a very useful player. I know most don't feel that way.
with all due respect, i can't name one player in the nba that can play great basketball in a out-of-shape condition, let alone Sully.
what doesn't kill you makes you stronger

Not sure what point you're trying to make here.
