Does anyone know what the max salary for Love would be if he signed as a free agent vs what it would be if he re-signed with the Cavs as part of a sign and trade?  I believe it is 1-2 million more if re-signs and would get a 5 year vs. 4 year contract.

It seems to me it would be in Love's best interest to take slightly less by opting out and signing directly with another team.  It's a little less financially, but his new team will be better off as they won't have to give up assets for him.  And couldn't he request an opt out after 1 or 2 seasons and re-sign at a larger amount anyway?

A sign and trade would be for 3-4 years with a 4.5% yearly raise on the first year's salary. He wouldn't be able to sign a 5 year deal since no team owns his Bird Rights. Ignore me I am dumb and don't have enough coffee in my system yet the Cavaliers own his Bird Rights since he never hit waivers. A full 5 year deal would be for 5 years (go figure) with a 7.5% yearly raise.

However, and S&T makes no sense because not only is it a smaller amount than signing as a free agent, it would carry through the salary cap explosion of 2016.

Saw a thread in reddit recently where they explored the max salaries of various free agents and potential free agents.

Looks like Love with 5th year to the Cavaliers would be a total value of about 107 million, versus just under 80 million if he signs with a new club outright.

About 3/4 down you can find the details - warning LOTS OF MATH

https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/2t4bq5/max_salaries_for_the_top_2015_free_agents_with/

Thanks, TP

So, here's the breakdown

Contract               Year 1            Year 2            Year 3            Year 4           Year 5           Total
Bird 5-year          $18,639,102   $20,037,034   $21,434,967   $22,832,899   $24,230,832   $107,174,834
Bird 4-year          $18,639,102   $20,037,034   $21,434,967   $22,832,899   N/A                $82,944,032
Standard 4-year   $18,639,102   $19,477,861   $20,316,621   $21,155,380   N/A                $79,588,964

So Love would receive the same amount year one.  By year 4, he would be getting $1.7 mil less.  That's not much of a sacrifice relative to the total dollar amounts.  If he is given an opt out after year 1, he wouldn't lose out at all... except the 5th guarantee.  Assuming the team he signs with has the cap space, a sign and trade doesn't make much sense.

^ That's on purpose, by the way. The Owners didn't want players to have the ability to pull a Carmelo Anthony and dictate their trade value by being able to extend-and-/sign-and-trade with specific squads.

The difference is, though, if Love signs a 5 year deal in 2016 the basis of the deal will be 30% of $89 million instead of $67.1 million. That is a much larger difference (and much more important).
