Melo believes he has the potential to play in the league again and has been working on the areas that he thinks could land him a roster spot. He says his basketball IQ has increased over the years, sparked by the time he played in the D-League, which helped him gain a better understanding of the game. Melo also has seen improvements in his offense.

“I need to be able to run open on the court, that’s one thing I need to do,” he said. “I’ve been working on my defense so that’s the thing that I think will keep me in the league.”

"I need to run and play defense to play basketball."

My goodness, he's come a long way!

I expect Fab Melo to be back in the NBA someday.

I am disappointed he didn't go to Europe though and feel this comeback is likely too much, too soon for Fab Melo. Another year or two of seasoning in high quality league in Europe would be ideal before attempting another run in the NBA.

Some guys just take a lot longer to develop. Look at Gerald Green for example. Let's not forget also that Fab Melo didn't have nearly as much basketball experience as most other guys his age. He started playing the game relatively late.

I fully agree. He would benefit greatly from another year or two in Europe, and coming back to the NBA too soon will hurt him long term.

He looks slimmer.   I honestly would have no problem giving him a tryout for the summer league team.
If he has improved/changed, Danny should forget the past and give him a tryout.

Could turn out to be another Whiteside situation

isn't that what they said about Whiteside?

Nothing wrong with bringing him in for a tryout

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Good for him.

I do believe that he has the size, mobility and a certain skill set to be at best, a serviceable backup in the NBA. Part of his problem is his feel for the game, as he's really just new to this (IIRC when we had him, he only had 6 years of basketball experience). If he says that his knowledge for the game has grown, and he now knows how and when to pick his spots, I think he's going to be a solid 10-12 minute Center at the very least.

Good luck, Fab. I hope he does come back in the NBA at some point.

For anyone interested in watching Fab Melo in a 6 second video down low, posting up, for the quick hook shot.

I like it, but I've been fooled before by his fluidity.

I think Melo is at worst a 5-10 minute serviceable back up.

Bring him back if he wants to be on a team friendly contract like McGee, and if not, he can go kick rocks, or breaks chairs. Hard for me to say I 'adore,' (pun intended,) him at all, but if given the chance, I can see him at least contributing due to his size.

Fab Melo is an example of why you shouldn't overvalue size combined with decent athleticism if there's nothing else there.
