Really interesting story and I see similarities with Danny Ainge's early career. Tough competitor, very good shooter and obviously more athletic than Danny was.
Connaughton can make big money playing either basketball or baseball but I sure hope he's still around when we get that #33 pick...

Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

Not so sure it's accurate to say Connaughton is more athletic than Ainge was.  Danny was considered one of the nation's premier athletes and was athletic/quick enough to be a solid defensive major league second baseman with the Jays.  His problem was he couldn't hit.  In the NBA was was as fast/quick in his prime to match up with all the speed guys in the league, and I can't remember any situation where you said Ainge can't handle player X athletically.  He was probably the best athlete on those mid to late 80's Celtics teams.

Connaughton is obviously stronger and can leap. But he's a different kind of player than Ainge was - in either sport.

Connaughton wouldn't be a bad pick with that second, second round pick. The kid could make it in this league with defensive and hustle. Both Ainge and Connaughton could have played baseball, and both are really good athletes. Who a better athlete? That's debatable. I'm pretty sure Danny didn't have a 44" vertical.

I bet this kid would be a first round pick if he was coming from overseas.

If he really is that athletic and that good of a shooter, what's the downside? Why is he being pegged as late second~undrafted?

He's 22 years old.

He seems to be mostly a spot up shooter.  Not much creativity off the dribble.

Finally, there's the whole baseball thing.  He's already been drafted by an MLB team.  I'm guessing NBA teams might be scared off by that.

He's under contract to the Orioles, I believe.  Supposedly he'd have been a 1st or 2nd round MLB pick if he wasn't playing basketball as well.

for whatever it is worth, here is some actual info and stats on him.

in baseball, he pitched in 6 A- league games for the orioles. his stats read:

IP     H        R     ER    HR    BB    IBB    K     ERA
14.1   13      9      4      0      3      0      10     2.51

too little to say anything definitive about his pro career. drafted in the 4th round, which means nobody saw him as a star pitcher.

in basketball, his senior year at ND he played sg/sf. he is 6'5" and his basketball stats that year were:

min   pts    asst   reb   2pt%   3pt%   ft%
36    12.5   1.5    7.4    57.3   42.3     78.1

first glance shows he played a LOT of minutes and didnt score a whole lot. but his shooting % look very nice.

small suggestion to the OP, if you are going to invite folks to discuss a player who is not well known, it would be nice to provide some info on that player. it helps us all and we can talk a bit more about the player.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Really?

TP to HJ for the info, and for recognizing the obvious fact that it saves a ton of collective time to post info in a thread rather than leave everyone to hunt for it on their own.

Could the fact that Pat is under contract with the Orioles cause a problem for his NBA future? I'd be glad if someone could elaborate on the matter ;D!

Apparently he's a hard worker... at 33 I would take him... could help with our weak shooting, plus that anticipation when he cuts to the hoop... the Garden will go crazy...

Seems like more of a candidate for 45 than 33, but I guess we could take a swing on him earlier if we really like him

We really need shooting. But the thing with Pat is that he almost always seems to make the right basketball play, not minding numbers or stats. I like that mindset and I think at #33 it would be an assertive pick.
Plus, he's from Boston!

Definitely worth #44....also a better chance of signing him.....NBA minimum is more $$ than he would make in baseball over the next three years...plus he got over 400k bonus from the O's i believe
