I am thankful for what he has done, but I would not want him back.  Do you really want a guy back who admitted to not playing D?   I don't especially on a young team.

He has already said his plan was to go LA.

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/04/22/report-rajon-rondo-planned-to-sign-with-lakers-before-trade-will-leave-mavericks-if-rick-carlisle-remains-coach/

I don't think he has any intention of coming back here and I think there is even less chance that Ainge would want him..

I don't think I'd want him back, just because he's a poor fit with our personnel and he might stifle Smart's development.

While I agree that he's just not a good fit with the guys on our team, I don't agree that he would have a negative impact on Smart's development.  Why do you think that the latter would occur?

::) Going out on a limb here, but it might have to do with minutes.

Do you still think he's the best PG in the NBA like you did a few weeks ago?

Hypothetically:

If Rondo can't get a good deal this summer and asks Danny for a 1 year "prove it" contract, what price would you take him for?

A few assumptions:

This would happen at the end of free agency and we have the money (so in this hypothetical this move wouldn't hurt any other moves.)

Rondo would get the start and we'd run the O through him.

The deal would be 1 year.

We can trade him mid season if we want.

I'll wait to post my thoughts. 100 Tommy Points to the winner.
I'm open to bringing him back.  I just wrote out a post dumping on the 1 year "prove-it" idea, but just changed my mind the more I thought about it.

I guess with the cap jumping 20 mil in 2016-17, we can actually afford to offer a 1 year "prove it" deal since once the 1 year is over we'd have cap space to offer him a larger deal.  Very interesting.

So my answer is basically just contingent on what else we can do with the roster.   Using our cap space to bring in Rondo and nothing else... that doesn't make much sense.  But if we make some trades to bring in a star like Melo (likely using Marcus Smart as a key piece), dump Wallace using a draft pick,  perhaps dump Bradley for a draft pick...   suddenly have cap space to bring in another star like Love... I'd be ok with giving Rondo an offer.   8-10 mil would be nice.   He's still a fine player in the right system.  He's basically been making teams worse for 3 straight years, but the talent is still there... he theoretically can still fit into a Rondo-centric offense.

If this is after the rest of free agency, I wouldn't have to much of a problem offering whatever cap space we had left (to a point, of course,I wouldn't give him the max)

Ideally, though, something like the MLE, with a second, totally nonguaranteed year

Worst case scenario, he takes Pressey's role of barely playing (albeit with a worse attitude)

I don't really get people having a problem with him taking minutes away from Smart: if he can't outplay Rondo for them, he doesn't deserve them
I'm bitter.

I think it is almost certain that if Rondo came back, our record would be worse with him than it was the past few months without him.  Then he goes and plays somewhere else after one year.  I can't think of any reason at any cost to do this.

Houston, Sacramento, Los Angeles, hey, maybe Brooklyn (he can help us by hurting them), but no, not the Celtics.

To sum up :

"I never play defense for 2 years"
"I'll never play for LA"

Thank you Rondo for your first wonderful years, I was a big fan. But your behavior after you left Boston makes me dislike you. You did that, it's nobody else fault.

His style of play does not fit our motion offense in my opinion....so I'd pass on Rondo this time around.

Bright and simple. I agree with you.  Under given and well defined conditions, the guy deserves a chance.. I can't stand haters and I can stand even less the idea to see him in purple/yellow at the TD Garden.

Let's be honest for a second, RR doesn't do so much to mingle with journalists and his behavior has often been regarded as pretty odd, at best... but, have you ever seen any NBA team playing in any more boring way than Dallas???
All their idea of team offense is basically leaning on "ball-to-Dirk = shot-no-matter-what" and "Monta-ball-hog-Ellis"... with the rare exception of Chandler Person's one-night shows.
I remember the infamous benching night of Carlisle and Rondo barking at each other.
Rondo's comment on the bench was "what have you brought me here for?"

You don't hire a Formula 1 driver to park cars outside a casino in Vegas, I'm sorry.
Didn't they know who Rondo was? What was his playing style?
So, the best idea to integrate him in the Mavs' system that popped up in Carlisle's mind was "bring the ball over the half court, give it to dirk and shut up"?
Dallas is an embarrassing team and Rondo has no part in their failure, regardless of his character an personality.
There have been games where Ellis took 24 shots, some totally out of any logic... has anyone questioned the guy?
Has anyone ever questioned how the Mavs' defense sucks big time because Dirk is less of a ghost and he caused several fouls on Tyson Chandler's effort to cover "Dirk-the-legend"?

Whenever someone puts Nowitzki and Bird in the same sentence, daring to compare the two, I feel cramps in my stomach and I feel like throwing up.
That's like comparing Leonardo to some window washer.

But again, you can see why Dirk is unquestionable and Rondo is an easy way out to cover one's inadequacy or failure, either coaching, managing or playing.

Thanking God I was born a Celt! :)

I'd be willing to personally donate to a Kickstarter campaign to help some other team sign him.

Just say, "No" to Rondo.

Loved the style of basketball the team played this year without him.  Let's not go back.

I see both sides here. ultimately, its just a hypothetical and odds he is back are very low. He was putting up crazy high assist numbers here. I know there must have been something said because guys would always shoot if it meant Rondo would get an assist. I get that, but if you can but scorers around him and be a good D team, why not let him run the show?

On the other hand I do like what we have now a lot. And I don't see how we could just add Rondo in and have it really work out, it would have to be the rondo show. He probably should just take a friendly deal on the lakers. He could run the show there setting Kobe up and he'd get top FAs and be a top team again soon. It's crazy how big an advantage being in LA is for them.

But come on, if the summer was almost over and we added some talent already and we've got money left over, you wouldn't pay Rondo a few mil? Run:

Honestly, no. I really wouldn't.

His actual skill/talent set doesn't benefit the team with the way it's constructed, and his attitude and selfishness would likely hurt (rather than help) the young guys on the team.

Also I'm not one of those guys who hates Rondo, as so many on here do.  I'd love to see him find a fitting role on a team where he can really excel.  I just don't think he's a good fit here in terms of either skill set or personality.
