Apparently, the pope is giving an outdoor mass in Philly on the third Sunday of the season, so the local archbishop made a request to the league not to schedule a game in Philly that day.  A guy named Howard Katz was responsible for scheduling those games.  According to Katz:

"Yes...The pope did influence the NFL schedule. My name may be Katz, but I wasn’t taking any chances."
